Kids still at home and working - Advice

What did she study at Uni ?

I ONLY ASK CAUSE IF SHE THINKS 100 A MONTH IS AMPLE I HOPE SHE DIDNT STUDY ECcONOMICS

I recommend you take £100 per week and put £50 of it in an ISA then present her with a surprise nest egg when she moves out. I was paying more than £100 per month board 20 years ago.

In my opinion if you have been managing to keep your your daughter in education without taking any board money, i think the best option would be to come to an arrangement of £250 a month saved up in a high interest account HSBC have one set at 6% if your an existing savings account holder or an ISA for a period agreed on by both yourself and your daughter( i would say five years) by which time she will have a sizeable amount saved on which to get herself on the housing ladder, and at the same time get her used to feeling of taking money out of hard earned cash.

When i first started work in 1972 , i only earned £7 a week ...... you can just about buy 'Harry Ramsdens' fish and chips for that now , as i found out in the Trafford Centre the other night !

If i remember right i gave me mam £3 per week out of that .....

If money's tight then take what you need, if it's not then make her save it, I'll be starting my first graduate job in a few weeks and afaik my parents aren't planning on taking anthing off me but I'm planning on putting away pretty much everything I earn minus commuting costs and a couple of hundred a month disposable income (and 50 quid for my season ticket ;) ). That way I'll be able to move out as soon possible.

I was on £90 a week when I was doing my apprenticeship for 2 years and £105 in 3rd year..

I used to pay me mam £50 a week out of the £90 and I still bought my own food and ran my motorbike etc

I knew she would struggle if I didn't help out though so was never really forced to pay but glad I did as I learnt how to budget and how the real world works, my girlfriend was very similar where as her sister who is 28 flits between parents and her boyfriends, pays neither of them anything and eats all there food (shes finished uni a few years back and earns a damn site more than I do) but gets away with it and it really fucks me off tbh, she has no sense on how much anything costs though so will be screwed at some point i'm sure!

Charge your daughter £400 a month and like others have said maybe put half of it away secretly, wish my mum had been in a position to do that as I'd own rather than rent!

I pay £90 a month, but I only stay at home around 1/2 nights a week.

That's only £22.50 per week, Kenney ...... your mum and dad wouldn't really be able to buy fuck all with that .. not even a match ticket !

I'd say you were getting a great deal , even though you don't appear to stay there much.

I dare say 'levets' daughter would be over the blue moon if she landed up with a deal like that herself !

Yeah mate I know its a good deal but I'm only an apprentice so £100 a week doesn't go a long way!

Yeah , fair enough mate .....

i'd say you were paying about the right amount in your particular case , but 'levets' daughter will be earning FOUR TIMES your weekly wage and has to be a bit more realistic with what she pays to her parents ....

by the way fair play to you for doing an apprenticeship ....... it's one of my biggest regrets that i didn't complete one back in the early seventies ..... it's likely that it will ALWAYS stand you in good stead , no matter what happens in the future.

She did a nursing degree at Salford University... so had no digs to pay for... lived at home obviously... Not allowed to take a job doing this degree, so they get a bursary of about£500/month..

Against my better judgement, the wife didn't take any of it.. as she had to pay car insurance, fuel and her repayment on her laptop.. blah, blah...

The thing is, we're skint (i had to take a drop of £400/month), yet even at uni, she had money to go out and get slaughtered at least once a week!... And endless supply of clothes and shoes! We can't!

Don't want to come across as greedy or payback time... but she needs to contribute to the household, and it needs to be adequate...

My stepdaughter has studied dance in Leeds for the past three and a half years .....

during that time her rent in shared digs hasn't dropped below the £85 per week level , at any of the three residences she's found herself in ....... i think the latest flat she's living in cost her about £125 per week in rent , and then she has to pay food/bills/transport costs to uni etc .

I would work out how much she costs in food and bills then add a little bit on.

depending on whether you want to push her out charge more.

When I was earning £140 a week at 17 years old my mum was taking £50 of it a week and I had a child

I'd take £300 a month (about a weeks wage) and if you can afford it put some of it away every month to give her back towards a deposit for a house/flat.

I'd take about £50 a week off her.
When I was still living at my parent's, I'd give my mum her keep as soon as I got paid. I'd then take the rest out with me on a night out, get rinsed by some girl and come home skint. I'd then take the money back off my mum so I had bus fare, cigs and dinner money for the week.

I was thinking about that level, but maybe start about £35 -40 until she completes her preceptorship (6 months).. then she receives the full Nurses pay...

Thanks for all your input lads & lassies...

I earn about £19k or so give me mam £250

I'm thinking of upping it as shes a bit skint lately

Thats the thing, these days so many are struggling so the housekeeping actually keeps a roof over the families head. That is the real world as we stand for many
