Vincent Kompany is set to be named Manchester City skipper – even if Carlos Tevez stays at the club.
The big Belgian stood in for Tevez during the Argentine striker’s absences last season, and is seen by many as the Blues’ captain to-be.
And M.E.N. Sport understands Tevez’s recent request to leave City has made his position as captain untenable.
Tevez was made skipper – with Kolo Toure being stripped of the armband – at the beginning of last season, in a bid to integrate him into the life of the club a little more.
But, while Tevez has been a good leader on the field, his frequent outbursts at manager Roberto Mancini, his two transfer requests and his sniping at Manchester have made him an unpopular figure among fans.
Kompany assumed the captaincy at a crucial stage of last season, when Tevez was ruled out for over a month with a hamstring injury, and skippered the Blues to the FA Cup semi-final win over United, delivering an inspirational speech in the Wembley dressing room before the game.
