Kylian Mbappe

Well this might be a boat worth missing. Prices are totally out of control indicative of a classic economic bubble. It seems that the burst which is inevitable will be speeded up as the intensity of the spiral is increasing much faster than anyone could have predicted.Simply put players bought now for 200 million will only be worth half that amount in a couple of years. With respect to Mbappe it really is incredible that people rate him so highly on the basis of a handful of excellent performances. People in classic bubble territory really are starting to lose the run of themselves.

It's not a classic economic bubble. Massively simplifying things.... In classic economic bubbles, the values are totally detached from the underlying ability of an asset to generate income (think tulip bulbs or crappy houses). Footballers and football generate entertainment income and commercial income by attracting fans who buy tickets and shirts and subscribe to media or buy affiliated products. The underlying media and affiliate product market is exploding as measured in real dollars spent. The values might be too high, but it isn't a classic bubble. Bubbles burst to practically zero.

To echo what some have said on here, the sums being talked about are plain stupid. Simply because Monaco say they want €180m or whatever the number is, does not mean he's worth €180m. He's worth whatever clubs are prepared to pay.

We paid how much for Jesus? £30m? A player who aged 19 scored 21 goals for Palmerias to win them the league, and who plays as a striker for Brasil. And we are being asked to believe MBarmé is worth 4 or 5 times that amount? Ridiculous.
or 1.5 Lukakus. No point trying to work out what is value in this market.

Questions I would ask:

1) Does he significantly improve the team, if so
2) Can we afford it?

I am in denial mode at the moment. If PSG are really in for him, then why haven't they concluded the deal, or at least made some headway with it?

By no means I meant lets go spend 180m on the guy. I mean for top players in general you either have to pay up or miss out. City want to be considered in that top tier so thats what has to be done.

As for Mbappe its up to the club to decide what he's worth not us so.

Agreed.

Perhaps you can spend £200m or £300m in one window because amortised, £300m might only cost you £60m plus wages this year. But that same £300m is also going to cost you an additional £60m plus wages next year and the year after and the year after that, etc even if you don't spend another penny.

My point is, blow out windows like this are a one off. No club can afford to do this every year. So next year, who's going to be spending another £200m or £300m in order to keep these transfer prices so inflated?

It won't be us or PSG since neither of us will be able to afford it.

Like Bayern you mean?

We are not in a position to operate like Bayern. Their domestic domination of a country that continues to produce better footballing talent than England puts them in a different situation.

However, I'm not saying there is one way to the very top, just giving my opinion on City's route. Also, at this point, Bayern have a stature that I suspect would make it easier for them to pull off one of these mega deals, should they choose to spend that much, more easily than City.
