lacking motivation to start running and get fit again

You need someone to go with who is more or less the same fitness level as yourself; you can rely on your natural competitiveness to push each other along without wanting to let each other down. I have always found that getting my training kit on is the hard part.

I cant get motivated to be honest. I sit here saying i'll go to the gym in an hour once that hour comes i say it again and again. Does my head in.

This is the hardest hurdle to get over.

You know there is efort and possibly pain coming up. Mentally you may feel all you want to do is rest after a hard day at work/college etc. It's so easy to get into the habit of not going.

But..

The benefits of going, apart from getting fit, are increased mental alertness and getting over mild depression (exercise is really good for when you feel down, endorphins and all that!).

So a bit of pain gets you healthy, feeling better about yourself and gets your mind working better.

Get out there and do it.

get a running/gym partner. As when you feel like you cant be arsed they call you and say "see you in half an hour" or something to that effect. Pulling out of it makes you feel like you are pulling a cheap sickie at work or something. The top and bottom of it is that they will motivate you when you cant be arsed and vice versa (unless they are as lazy as you then it will never get done!)

I cant run too far to be honest find the pressure to my ankle after so long is a killer by running on the pavements was told to run on the grass as it wont be as much strain to the ankles than the roads.
So thats the main reason why I cycle than run still have a bit of a belly but feel healthy most days head out on the bike for 40-60 minutes and now and again I get paiin to the knees when I start off but grand after a minute or so.

Can you not play a team sport instead?

I HATE running and suffer similar the same motivational problems you're facing, but play netball twice a week, and even if I really cant be arsed (quite often), I have to drag my sorry arse out as I'd be letting everyone else down if I didnt. Always feel better for it after though

My advice is too look at pictures of attractive young men with no tops on. If that doesn't make you jealous and give you motivation, then I don't know what will.

as others have said really - consider switching your sport, maybe you don't have the motivation for running as you don't like it?

I participate in a number of sports regularly, but one sport i HATE is running... I can cycle for long distances, fight nonstop until i vomit but running... i just give up after 5mins, i find it boring.

a great suggestion made above is Swimming, whats more motivational than stopping yourself from drowning?

Twice this year I have got into running and twice I have started to feel fitter and shed quite a bit of weight only to get injured playing football in the most inocuous situations.

My motivation is constantly trying to beat my best time on the run I go on. Once I think I have done as well as I can I'll extend my run and do the same.
