Lads on ebikes/motorbikes/scooters.

Come to Florida where riding without a helmet is legal. Bikers over taking you while you are doing 70mph with no helmets and wearing t shirts on the motorways!
At the beginning of the latest Top Gun film Tom Cruise is in the desert he gets a call jumps on his huge motor bike and blasts down a long road at like 90mph with no helmet (Presumably looking cool).
Thereby influencing thousands of young men to not wear helmets, absolute ego ridden dickhead.

It’s their lives, what’s the problem?
I would and do always wear a helmet but each to their own

I think Tom is in the wrong here, speaking as a very experienced rider, he shouldn't be promoting the idea there is no need for one. Well that's my opinion.
Young lads are daft and ignore danger. They are also easily influenced.
Wearing a helmet is law in the UK and Australia, I believe that is the way it should be.
I came off my Bonneville in my 20s slid along the road on my back and head first into a steep kurb. I firmly believe I'd have died had I been helmetless.

It's similar to seat belts really.

I really understand where you’re coming from but I’m still conflicted whether it should be mandatory.

Not really influenced anyone there, he's riding a 40 year old bike for 30 seconds in the film without a helmet. It was nessacary for the call back to the first film. He throws the dust cover off and rides to the hangar. Big deal.
And he would definitely struggle to do 90 on that bike without a helmet on, the wind blast would blow his sunglasses off. And its not a huge bike, Tom just makes it look huge.
I've still got mine ;-)

There are a few arguments for it, imo. The obvious one is the people who have to scrape the brain off the road afterwards not having to do that job. The family of the idiot being spared a huge amount of grief is another. The cost involved is a third (us having to pick up the tab of the dad who leaves a single mother and kids behind, or pay for the intensive care).

But a more subtle one, particularly for teenagers and young adults, is peer pressure. I remember when I was a kid, if you wore a cycle helmet to school, you were a total loser, and that was because you didn't have to. Sure, there are some teenagers who are just dickheads, but there are probably plenty of kids and young adults in this category who would happily wear a helmet, but value fitting in over their own safety. And helmet laws give people in that situation an excuse. Sure some teenagers will still encourage each other to break the law, but it's an available option for kids who don't want to go along with it, and that will likely be the majority. People's behaviour is determined largely by social norms, and laws can go some way to establishing them.

With bicycles, it's slightly different, because it's fairly well established that helmet laws reduce the number of people cycling, and the benefits of cycling probably outweigh the risk of not wearing a helmet as long as the infrastructure is in place. Few people wear helmets in the Netherlands, for example. But electric bikes are different. There might be a benefit to traffic, but there's none of the other health benefits.

Knew someone would argue. Probably a Tom fan. :)

On film without helmet he's ridden many big very fast bikes like a Kwaka GPZ900R was the fastest production motorcycle of its time and the first to cross the 150 mph barrier — a fitting companion for a character known for his “need for speed.”

I'm not sure how many teenagers are looking to a 62 year-old man for cool tips, to be honest.

There’s a woman currently on trial from Oldham who didn’t see two lads on a bike as she pulled out, she’s getting done for killing them, now these lads had no insurance, no helmets had been riding up and down the high street and just run a red light, this poor woman didn’t see them by all accounts when she pulled out and they hit her and end up in a wall, dead instantly! That poor woman must be going through the wringer when those two idiots were lucky not to kill someone themselves, had they been riding properly, had helmets on it probably wouldn’t have happened, I hope she gets off I have every sympathy for her, thise two I couldn’t give a shit about.
