Is it illegal to ride an electric bike on the road in the UK?

You can ride on roads, cycle paths and other places where bicycles are allowed under GB law. You don't need to register the bike as you would a motor vehicle, including mopeds and motorbikes, or have insurance or wear a helmet.

Maybe it is legal to ride one without safety gear or paperwork? The internet just coughs up this result it doesn't say that it's illegal at all mate.
He said electric MOTORBIKE. Big difference.

I think you may be mixing up e-bikes and electric motorcycles/mopeds.

Extract from the website below:

"An e-bike is an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) which is equipped with an electric motor to assist a rider when they are pedalling. By law it cannot propel the rider on its own - if it does, it is classed as a motorcycle or moped".

People were referring to bloody electric bikes as motorbikes, nobody is driving high powered electric fucking bikes on pavements and roads causing a nuisance with balaclavas and weapons, it's mainly electric bikes .

You think that the main problem is actual very expensive MOTORBIKES and not electric bikes? What's the air like on the planet you live on?

I am saying that the issue isn't actual motorbikes electric or otherwise, it's scooters and electric bikes.

Not many people are complaining about motorbikes.

Electric bike crime, including theft, robbery, and use in other criminal activities, is a growing concern, with reports indicating a significant increase in offenses involving these vehicles. Criminals are attracted to e-bikes due to their affordability, agility, and ability to evade detection by cameras. This leads to a range of issues, from petty theft to more serious crimes like drug trafficking and robbery.

It’s hooky electric cycles that have been modified to perform like an electric motorcycle

Many of the kids are on these in Salford.

It's national news.

Also, electric scooters fall into the same category as electric motorbikes, as are e-bikes capable of power assistance beyond 15.5mph, or power assistance independent of EAPC. Both are illegal to use without the correct documentation.

There are way more electric bikes than there are electric motorbikes, that isn't even part of the conversation. There are probably more petrol versions on the road and always have been.

Many isn't a definitive number, it shouldn't be used to refer to people using them as more than. Again when people refer to electric bike crime they o mean either the scooters or electric bikes.

How do you even know that these bikes aren't licensed? We do however know that scooters and electric bikes are not which is why the subject was broached.

Next week, how do we tackle crime in cars and should we make criminals register them?

It’s probably not illegal as it’s a bike, however it’s got an engine on it that can generate quicker acceleration than a moped due to the lightweight construction of them. There needs to be some review on where and who can operate them as they end up in the hands of teenagers as Christmas presents who don’t understand what danger they can pose.

The people committing crimes are mainly people on scooters and electric bikes.

The rogues are modifying scooters and bikes that's the whole point. Again I don't see grifter type bikes on pavements or used by kids fucking about on roads.

...or the bikes that I showed you. We get them racing up and down our road several times a day. Balaclava lads and kids. Sometimes gangs of them. The electric bikes that you refer to are sometimes there too.

I agree it's ridiculous, I'm not advocating for that I am just saying that at present it isn't illegal to drive on a cycle path or a road on one of those bikes without insurance etc.

The electric bikes I refer to are everywhere, you must have a better class of rogue where you live to afford one of those.

I get out a lot and I do have the wherewithal to understand that teenage kids are not in general going out and buying top of the range motorbikes to fuck around with, they are buying/stealing electric scooters and bikes.

It's not hard to figure out, or is it?
haha. I love how you insist you're right....yet you're so wrong. The Sur-Ron bikes are very common around here....they're not technically "motorbikes" but I can't see them being legal. And yeah...the fuckers ride them on paths, parks and the main roads.

You quote that the local scrotes round your way are driving around on £4,200.00 motorbikes, when everyone I see causing a nuisance is on an escooter or an ebike.

Do you live in Chelsea? :)
