Thank you for all your replies guys. Got plenty of ideas from this.

Sorry OP, got sidetracked. Punch in Irton Hall in Google and see what you think. The rooms are palacial mate and at the end of Jan you will probably get a deal. Plus I know the owner and manager. Just depends if you think it's a bit remote for you. Let me know if I can help.

No, but I've heard of the name. It's Steve Cottrell (the latest owner) that I know up there and a lad called Simon who lived a few doors away and worked at Sellafield. Everyone else was pretty transient apart from the houseowners the other side of the oak tree. Is that where jimmy lived?

-- Tue Oct 16, 2012 7:20 pm --

andyhinch...do you have a van with a big fuck off City crest on the back of it? How many City fans can be up there, ffs? If so, I saw you at the petrol station end of Irton Lane about a year or so back. I shouted 'C'mon city!' at you. I think we had a big game with Chelsea on or something.

Don't know Marshy (or at least think I don't...Dave the Gardner?). My girlfriend stopped coming up because of work so I gave it up in the end because the winters were a bit shit on my todd. I get up there if I have to work at Sellafield or in summer when I do quite a bit of camping/walking from Eskdale/Wasdale. Know the Bower well. Favourite is the Boot Inn though...cracking pint of Robbies (brought up on the stuff...Jennings is a poor second IMHO).

Don't know who had that van then...it was an 01946 number on it!

P.S. Give my regards to Simon...say from Mark who used to live "int' bottom 'ouse"

Christ, why did he leave? Jumped or pushed? Good laugh up there...I used to smoke (gave up since) and I loved the way those tables were 'reserved for smokers only' during the tourist season. Do service work in B229 now and again although I tend to fend it off to the other lads these days. The new red tape does my f*****g head in.

That's unusual for Robinsons. From Landlords I know, they're one of the better ones. What they don't tolerate is 'buying in'. Sean did seem the type to chance his arm.

The term 'girlfriend' may have indicated youth...I'm actually 51 and have been around 229 for many years on and off. We probably blamed each other for a fuck up without even knowing it!

Not much younger Stuart Cambell, I we helped the ventilation, draw up all the flow diagrams

I'd you want a romantic getaway I can recommend the place I went to this weekend: the queens head at troutbeck it's a classic olde worlde pub but it's a real gastro pub. It might push your budget a bit but it's perfect for a cosy winter break with log fires and little nooks and crannies. The rooms are nice and the beer superb, real ale from everywhere.

We paid 150 per night B&b but I noticed some of the websites were doing two nights for £200. You're near to the busier Windermere towns but at the beginning of a stunning drive to ullswater.

I'd only recommend it if your a foodie because the grub- modern English but all local and beautifully cooked, and the best full English you'll ever have - is superb but not the cheapest. You might pay £100 for a big meal for two with a load of beer and wine.

It's a gorgeous place to get cosy.

Can't disagree live down the road midweek residents restaurant is good, best valley in the lakes for me

This is true, had one of the nicest meals there last year, chef did a potted beef that still makes my mouth water thinking about it, just a shame there was only 3 of us eating there.

Shame Tims tater'ash is no longer on menu though.
