Can someone tell me what I should be looking out for when I buy I lap top?

all I use it for is downloading films and putting them on disc. I don't play games or anything like that, all I do is films.

If it helps the only shop I'm going to is Pc World as I haven't got time to go anywhere else, I'm looking to spend no more than £400.

Any advice would be grateful.

P.S I'm really busy at work so if I don't reply right away just call me a ****.

Cheers.

Well if you gonna be downloading and watching films £400 is more than enough I would buy something for less and invest the money in a nice 3TB external drive to store those movies once you download them. Just something with a decent amount of RAM and a reasonable sized hard drive and a large screen. Nothing too fancy and fook PC world get it online and you cut the cost even more.

How do I know what's a decent size Ram?

When describing the machine it will be something like Processor (I3, I5, I7), RAM (500MB, 1GB, 2GB) and Hardrive (250GB or more). You want something with at least a 1G for the RAM description the more the better for what you are using it for an I3 will be fine you want 500GB or more on the harddrive.

PC world is a rip off yes definitely.

With £400 to spend id go for a £200 notes lappie, £100 on a hdd and £100 on a streaming box

if your gonna keep this laptop for say 4 or 5 years, in 3 years you'll be sat watching some porn (or running some program or something ) thanking me that you bought 8 gb ram, as in 3 years 1 2 or 4 ram will seem like the steam age

Maybe yes, but it will still convert a 700mb avi in half an hour which is what he wants the machine for and in 5 years time he wont be using dvd at worst he will be streaming and ram wont make a gods bit of difference

Yeah quicker the conversion the better for me, so what am looking out for? As you say I could stream a few films too.

Check ebay. Use the specs what people have said on here. You can choose down the left hand side what you want. There is some good refurbished laptops for £100 that will be more than enough for what you want.

Reading some comments about windows 8 it's meant to be a bit shit and complicated, mainly only good for a touch screen pad thing.
