Ive really liked Jane Campions films, this is very good, tense and quite menacing performance from Cumberbach. Superb acting all round. Good western.

I agree with both of these assessments.

I think it doesn't quite explore repressed emotions in the time of the Alpha Male cowboy era, so it doesn't explain why the protagonist's action came to the fore.

I watched it twice and felt it explained everything.
It's a slow burner but stays with you after the end.
The lad who plays Pete is excellent.
