Late \ Early bar in Munich

Bayern flo quick question:

How affected are the English garden and Hirschgarten during Oktoberfest?
Are they busier than usual?

Thanks in advance.

Also the brewery on Landsberger strasse near Hackerbruke is that likely to be busier than usual?

Braustuben is it's name a truly great place IMO.
English Garden and Hirschgarten should be absolutely no problem as a meeting point for your fans. Both are quite far away from the Octoberfest and the beergardens are very big (7000-8000 capacity).
The brewery on Landsberger Straße is not for away from the Octoberfest and at lunchtime it's always very busy. I wouldn't recommend it for big groups!
At the other side of the Hackerbrücke (on the right side) is a big beergarden which should be no problem. In a beergarden you don't need a seat in order to get a beer. It's self-service.

For the Octoberfest in general: At lunchtime you'll normally get easily seats.
But when the weather is good, I would prefer a beergarden if you're thinking about a big meeting point for the fans. The prices are cheaper and the real madness (in a positive way) at the Octoberfest starts not before 6pm. People who spent Monday or Wednesday in Munich, should go to the Octoberfest and check out the atmosphere in a tent.

The beertents open at 10am.

Please keep in mind, that the beer served at the Octoberfest is up to ca. 20% stronger than the normal beer of the certain breweries

They serve from 11 am unless they've changed it.

..and can we sing Munich songs in Munich?

Until recently it was 11 until 11.

I admit that even though I've been many times I can't stand the Wies'n (Oktoberfest). Over commercialized, overcrowded, overrated and overpriced.
Whenever I'm in Munich for a game during the Wies'n these days I go to the pub instead of the fest.

Cheers Bayern flo, is the beer garden you are talking about Augustiner Keller?

Enjoyed a few good evenings in there!
Yes, I'm talking about the Augustinerkeller ;-)
Nice place indeed

@Keith Moon:
You can sing whatever you want. It's your decision to make fun of 1958 or not ;-)
And most of the people probably don't know that you associate Munich with ManUre-Fans ;-)

In general: If you're not looking for trouble, you'll have absolutely no problem in Munich, on the way to and inside the stadium. In Munich it's 'Live and let live'

In sectors 109-117 and 126-134 you're not allowed to wear your shirts
In sectors 108, 215-225 and 308-323 you should not wear your shirts unless you want to see Bayern-shirts in your sector
In the rest of the stadium you can wear your shirts or mankinis

A little story: Before the England-Germany match at the last WC, a english guy went throw the crowded beergarden and put (or at least tried to put) the text of 'God save the queen' on the tables. Hmh... I wouldn't dare to do this in England :-)
But I've also never experienced problems in your country ;-)

What are the bars like for wearing your colours in? Do they frown on it?

Most bars will let you wear colours but there are exceptions. As long as you are obviously out for a good time and not causing trouble you should be ok.

I take it colours are out of the question in the beer gardens?

Not at all, colours in the biergardens should be fine, just don't start chucking beer around or dancing on the tables (same goes for the fest).

You'll probably be surprised how much both sets of fans are allowed to mingle before the game, there are very few "Home only" bars etc.
The Munich police will be hands off and very lenient as long as fans are having a few beers and behaving well. They will be around though and will react heavily if trouble starts.
Most German fans at club level enjoy meeting and drinking with English fans so you should get no hassle from our lot.

Re Pre match boozing, Oktoberfest etc, don't forget that if you arrive at the stadium obviously arseholed you probably won't get in.
Festbier is strong and meeting in the biertent at 11am, almost 10 hours before kick off is not a good idea.

During the world cup I had a great time boozing with Bayern fans in Munich.
They were a great bunch and believe it or not they do like the English.
I am in Munich for 4 days next week so I will have a look out for some bars that look good and stay open late and post on here
Remember its Oktoberfest so the whole place will be awash with drunks.... fantastic.
I am sure all those going will have a ball just wish I was.

Re the last paragraph, I agree. From my own experience of Oktoberfest 3 years ago, I found that the beer was deceptively strong and it catches a lot of people out including me. One minute I was in the Hofbrau tent having a great time and the next thing I remember I was tumbling out of a taxi in a suburb of Munich and not knowing how the hell I'd ended up there. I'll add that I was drinking for a lot less than 10 hours yet I still ended up legless. And believe me, you see plenty of legless people at Oktoberfest ;)

I'm not sure what I'll do for this game. I fancy another taste of the Oktoberfest atmosphere but if the weather is nice then the English Garden will appeal.

Agree that it is potent and after 3-4 Mass (liters) you are really steaming and this is coming from a lad who likes a beer or two. The beer will probably be around 6% at the Oktoberfest and eating plenty beforehand and during is strongly advisable :-)

Agreed plenty of pork and chicken and pretzels are the order of the day.

Spot on.

Pretzels (Brezn as they are locally known http://bar.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brezn) are great for soakage. A nice roast chicken or roast pork knuckle is also excellent as it is greasy and oily, which means you will not (in theory) get as twatted as you would normally. Plenty of kebab shops in Munich aswell. Great donners.
