Same thing that happened to Rooney imo. Most players start hitting 40 games per season around age 20, which means they've got somewhere between 13-15 years before they really start dropping off around age 34, 35. But Rooney and Sterling (and Torres, Aguero, Lukaku) were both playing 40+ games per season from age 16 and 17, which means they dropped off a bit sooner than others. Less to do with age and more to do with how much time they've spent on the pitch.
