Learning a language......

The Babbel apps are quite good, especially if you are in the habit of carrying a phone/tablet device. They offer a broad range of vocabulary and grammar constructions, and with video, too, they have a more contemporary feel than Linguaphone. I find having to repeat pronunciation for accuracy a tad frustrating, at times, but I suppose it's forcing you to conform to an acceptable and, therefore, comprehensible pattern of speech.
I hate anything with speech recognition, because it's almost certainly wrong. Get a proper native speaker to check your pronunciation. Computers can't even recognise a native speaker half the time. And if they're not telling you exactly where you're going wrong and how to fix it like a professional teacher would, then you're not going to learn anything.

I do shift work, so can spend a bit of time on the basics and picking up common words on-line on nights when it's quiet which should help. There is a tutor about 20 miles away so may try use them too or place an ad on gumtree and see if there is someone more local.

Have picked up a bit from 'memrise' although my pronunciation is probably way off it's better than nothing at present. And as someone has already mentioned I'm treating it as picking up a skill, the sense of achievement will push me i think.

If you try to learn a language from courses, tapes, computers, tutors etc you will only get as far as 'tourist level' I.e able to order a few beers, book a hotel room, converse with the locals on basic issues without having to point etc etc -but it is worth getting to this basic level.
The only way to become anywhere near fluent is to live in the country for at least six months and sprechen zee lingo for all that time without recourse to any English ( that will take you at best to conversational level but well short of more advanced communication required in business for example).
This is what most people who take up a language don't realize. They imagine they will become fluent by taking up a course and when they realize this isn't the case they lose interest. Best to have realistic expectations and then you won't be disappointed .

Not sure I agree that you can only get to a basic level. I have have achieved good levels in fluency in a number of languages with course books plus tutor over Skype but for absolute fluency I agree that you need to live in country.

If you do German I can offer you a tip.... They don't have a word for an Aeroplane...

They call it a Flugzeug.. translates to a Flying thing.

and in conversation just keep nodding and say Genau...
