Yesterday I picked up a cheap toy boxed chess set and board from a charity shop in Morecambe for £2.95.

To be honest, I don't know why I bought it, because I haven't got a clue how to play, and it has always seemed too complicated, although I am reasonable at draughts.

Anyhow, working on the basis that you are never too old to learn, and , thanks to You tube there are plenty of beginners videos out there, I'll give it a go.

I now know how to set the pieces out to start, so that's more than I knew yesterday.

Any good players out there?

It's fun if you play with someone your level and as you both improve find someone else who is a little better. Lot's of snobbery about chess but it's an enjoyable game if you're having a few beers and just having fun with it.

I used to play a lot as a kid with my older brother and he'd smash me most times. However, it was because I thought in singular moves. Eventually, I used to set traps and he'd get annoyed, but then I'd be so pleased I'd rush the game and end up in a stalemate! I'll never get the chance to beat him, since he's gone, but chess is a game of patience, like poker.

I can watch chess and poker for hours.

Try computer chess. Get yourself multiple devices and fire up them all at the same time. Copy the moves of your opponents in another game. You'll win some, you'll lose some.

I downloaded a free game from the web, it has 9 game levels (every level increases the machine's "thinking time"). I won 1-2-3 but I've played for several years on No.4 and never won.

Taught my 12 year old lad last year and he is now beating me regularly.

He loves it, plays at school and actually spends time studying the game so fair play to him.
