Learning to play Chess

Yesterday I picked up a cheap toy boxed chess set and board from a charity shop in Morecambe for £2.95.

To be honest, I don't know why I bought it, because I haven't got a clue how to play, and it has always seemed too complicated, although I am reasonable at draughts.

Anyhow, working on the basis that you are never too old to learn, and , thanks to You tube there are plenty of beginners videos out there, I'll give it a go.

I now know how to set the pieces out to start, so that's more than I knew yesterday.

Any good players out there?

Plenty of on line games at beginner level.

Taught my 12 year old lad last year and he is now beating me regularly.

He loves it, plays at school and actually spends time studying the game so fair play to him.

I used to beat my dad. Drove him nuts.

I taught myself the basics when I was probably 8-9 by getting up early on Sunday mornings and watching open university. I got an electronic chess game for Xmas and started to learn more. At high school the chess club in winter was the place to be. I remember playing in a tournament at Parrs Wood and getting check in 4 moves. Just got back into it by my nephew who fancies himself as a player. Loads of decent apps now make it really easy to play.

I use the ‘Chess’ app every day. Just the free version. It is brilliant and I suspect the paid version is even better. A daily game against a bot is just the ticket.
