Learning to program in C

Re: Learning to program in C

C is the daddy - learn it well and it will serve you for ever - the current crop of 'in vogue' stuff are all based on it - Java, C#, C++, Javascript plus others.

But. And there is a big but. We're gone a little past 1995 now (prior to which you crafted pretty much everything and drove a green screen) so its the application of the languages against API's and Libraries and all the rest of it which is where the clever stuff is - got too hard for me then ...

Sadly the inventor of C, Dennis Ritchie, died last year, just after Steve Nobs - whose entire product line of white itoys was based on Dennis Ritchie's technology but he got no real recognition.

Re: Learning to program in C

One of the best books for C is the "C Programming Language" written by the fathers of C. Use that as a beginners guide.

The best way to learn any programming language is to start off with projects. Start small so that you don't get overwhelmed.

^^ This, Lynda do some nice tutorial dvd's also which can be found if you know where to look.

Personally i think pascal is the way forward (/me runs away laughing)

Javascript is only denounced by utter noobs, that is all; carry on.

C is the Hitler of programming languages

I'm a bit of a self taught "programmer" (cue groans from you pros)...I do some VBA stuff these days from time to time (hardly programing I know) but years ago I wanted to write some modelling stuff and looked at C what a load of shite that was...ended up doing it in Delphi (visual pascal) such a well constructed language I got very much into it writing all sorts of useful stuff (for me at least)....surprised it never took off like C and all it's bastard children.

I would definitely start with C. It teaches you how languages work. The higher level languages will make sense after learning it. When i learn new languages now i usually youtube them. But for C the book "a book on C" is fantastic and I recommend. Good luck.. Ps learn python next as it is pure sex

<3 python, ok it can be a resource hog but modern pc's make that arguement invalid. Javascript is solid also, only noobs denounce it.

You could try Sams Teach Yourself C in 24 Hours

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sams-Teach-Yourself-24-Hours/dp/067231861X" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sams-Teach-Your ... 067231861X</a>

I've never actually used this version of the book myself but if its in the same format like the other books it should break all the basics down for you and give you plenty of examples.
