Leeds United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

The optimist in me thinks that sometimes you need to hit rock bottom to rebound, like we did in November 2020.

Today was more like a sequel to Leverkusen. The starters came back in, and fucked up almost as badly as the squad players 3 days ago. It's time for the leaders in the squad to pull everyone together and ask how they want the season to play out, because it's not a quality issue, it's not a tactical issue, there's just too many players phoning in performances and not giving everything, whether we're 2-0 up or 2-0 down midweek.

They need a collective slap and some smelling salts. We still have everything to play for this season, 4 points is nothing, we're in both cups, we qualify easily in the CL with 2 wins out of 3 against 2 of the worst teams in the competition.
A quality issue is exactly what it is

How you can watch that collapse and think it has anything to do with structure/tactics/Pep is incredible.

The defence gifted them a goal and then the whole team lost their bottle.

First half was one of our most dominant performances all season, they weren't lacking sharpness or rhythm then.

In the second half, we had 1 shot (blocked) up until the 88th minute, during the same period, Leeds had 6, including 2 goals. Pep didn't make sub or any meaningful tactical/structural change until Cherki came on in the 75th minute, when we had dropped a 2 goal lead.

A huge part of Pep's role is to adapt to what is happening on the pitch and change the way we are playing, through tactics or substitutions. Yes the players needed to be better than they were, but it's on him to correct them. He just wasn't good enough or quick enough to react in that second half.

Great win, well played you blues

Fuck off to all the miserable cunts / rags / dippers who’ll swamp this thread with their negativity, we scored a last minute winner you wankers, we’re second in the league, be happy
Indeed!

A lot of our fanbase need to get real, get used to this City side not being a very top side anymore and just get behind the players we have.

Plus football is like this anyway. Even very top sides can be utterly shit from time-to-time. We were no worse today than we were at home to Crystal Palace in the Fourmidables season, at home to United and Leeds in 2020-21, or against Brentford and Everton at home in the treble season. Yet we had much better sides in those seasons than we do now.

Having a top side is 90% down to pure chance that a team needs players in positions where top players are available and want to sign for you at that very moment in time. Sometimes teams have long runs of that happening but, it never lasts forever, then it’s someone else’s turn at the top.

That’s English football. Unfortunately, at the moment we’ve just slid in quality somewhat from our very top sides a few recent years ago. Add to that we have a small number of players who are in their prime years in our squad, loads of young lads and loads who’ve not played more than a dozen to two dozen PL games. But that shouldn’t make us carbon copies of slapped-arse Rags and Scousers because these players aren’t performing to levels we’ve seen from much better to players than them.

I hope the early leavers enjoy watching the 349th City goal they’ve missed after the 80minute mark since the takeover, and it was a match winner to boot!, on Match of the Day, experiencing none of it themselves.

correct, god knows how many games liverpool won last season in the 90+ minutes, 4 points in it with arsenal to come to the Etihad and people think were not in a title race
We're not in a title race. We are clinging on to Arsenal, but they're head and shoulders above us. I don't think I'm a doom and gloomer, and we are rebuilding, fine, but we are miles off it.

We've conceded two goals in our last three games. That's not sustainable for a team wanting to achieve good things.

Absolute shambles of a second half performance. Lost control of the game and no leadership on the pitch to calm things down when heads were being lost all over the place.

Yes the game should have been out of sight in the first half, but we've got away with one there.

We went from a game that was far too easy for us in the first half, to one that we struggled to get into in the 2nd half, and it has to be said that our mistake riddled back line were dreadful, expecially Gvardiol and Nunes.

It's a good job that Foden remained alert, because Doku and Haaland were offering next to nothing in the way of penetration upfront, and we've just gotta be thankful that we got the win in the end.

Until the defence is sorted, the big picture won't change. Posters on here look at some of the clean sheets and seem to forget what they witnessed during the actual game. Halftime at Newcastle - 0-0 but Woltemade should have bagged a couple by then, if not a hat-trick.

Or the last 15 minutes today - the corner that just floated across the 6-yard line without anybody challenging for it, the (albeit very good) cross from the right that had everybody panicking, there was another unchallenged header from a similar spot to Leverkusen's 2nd goal etc... Notice I haven't mentioned the two glaring errors leading to their goals.

Nothing has changed in the past year, other than NOR making a really good stab at LB. Said it before, but the fact that we seriously bought Ait-Nouri as a full-back goes to show that nobody who matters took the defensive shambles of last year at all seriously.

I can't remember any team - maybe Brazil 1970 - who won anything while being so porous at the back.

(The lack of earlier subs today is another matter...)

There must be a plan - I suppose?
Whilst we have a much improved shot stopper who will save us more times than not..he is SHIT at crosses..always has been. Clubs are targeting him at corners and free kicks, he's weak doesnt use his body... flaps...in those situations, but what a shot stopper

Great win but massive improvement needed all round. Several of this squad just aren't up to it, not naming names we all know. Phil motm not many others had good games

Here’s a virtual drink on me. Bravo.
