I subscribe to a magazine titled "Steam World" - rail travel in the days before quite a few on this forum were even twinkles in the parent's eyes. Anyway to the question of why an hour or so extra travel time. As someone mentioned the extra time is usually the result of Engineering works. Not the easiest document to understand. Find the date and then click on it and it explains ! Someone on here works for the railways so can perhaps explain better if reads this thread.
One of the articles mentioned a train leaving Preston for Glasgow southbound rather than northbound - it was simply the way to gain access to a different route. Scared the life out of the author of the article.
