I work there, the place is like Royston Vasey. Kick one and they all fucking limp.

Whenever i feel down i go for a walk around there and it makes me realise that life isn't that bad after all.

However if you want pie shops and charity shops it's the best place on earth.

mmmm rotting animal and lily of the valley - gets my vote

Stop bigging it up otherwise people may go there.

st helens, wigan, widnes , runcorn, warrington, birkenhead , oldham, rochdale, preston- the list of depressing northern towns is endless. am so pleased i left in fairness. they give them false hope with a tesco express and wetherspoons !!

The only northern town I personally know of thats improved in recent years is Bury, really seems to be taking off but probably at the expense of smaller nearby places like ramsbottom rawtenstall etc. Not sure what the nightlife is like as I haven't been out in Bury since I was at college.

There are still nice places to live in the North, I went to climb pendle hill the other day and parked up in a really nice village called barley green, definitely somewhere I'd consider moving to in the future.

Leigh's a mining town full of working class people. I didn't grow up here, but I generally like the people who did. Proper people, salt of the earth, no airs and graces around them.

I'd live here for the rest of my life if the town centre wasn't so soul crushingly depressing.
Meaning .....inbred.

i live a couple of miles from leigh in astley, allways considered leigh a dump would only go there in day time full of dickheads at night.
Investors of the world seem its ok building a new morrisons near leigh rugby ground and a new tesco in the town center along with a multi screen cinema think it will be the only one with permenent sub titles because in leigh they cant talk proper

I'm 20, from Leigh (Leyth) and am fortunate enough to be at University over the Pennines for the majority of the year. I study Human Geography and I've even pondered doing a dissertation on Leigh as growing up there has really proved benefitial in my studies, especially on the social side of the subject. I've got to post something in this thread!

If you went to The Goose on a Sunday, you'll have discovered the remains from a Saturday night in Leigh. Saturday night truly brings out the worst people in Leigh, and the worst in them. It's horrid and I refuse to go there. Never do it. A Kids club, a Henleys promotional party nightclub and a Rag Indie Bar are the 3 main attractions. Sadly, they attract many kinds and at 20, (in fact, for anyone between the ages of 18-30 with even the slightest pinch of sophistication and intelligence inside their body) it's just unbearable.

Like Damocles put it earlier, Leigh was a proper Northern industrial town which, like many others, declined and hasn't and sadly, won't ever, recover from. There are and always will be a lot of good, honest, hard-working people from Leigh but many of these are of the older generation and sadly, growing up in this area had me believe that many people of my generation were dickheads. Not really true, but in the Leigh, the ratio of good to bad (decent to dickhead) people of this age swings more towards the bad. It reflects badly against the town itself. Myself and my mates have discussed this exact topic many times and to put it simply, those of my age/generation in this area get stuck within a social bubble exclusive to Leigh where they are within their comfort zone. Outside of this town, they'd come across as 'the minority'.

The town centre is shit. Less said about that, the better. But look at other towns around it like Wiggin and Bolton, and they're pretty much the same but on a larger scale. Like someone said before be, being part of the Wiggin council proves to be unhelpful to the town and being seen as a part of Wiggin itself is somewhat of an annoyance for locals, including myself.

Leigh's getting worse and those growing up in a declining town aren't exactly helping, put it that way.

Excellent post.

Cheers!

A girl got raped in town on Saturday night too. Thought you'd all love to hear.

Good post.

I find that the more progressive young people of Leigh look more towards Warrington as opposed to Wigan.

As Swinton RL fan myself, I love the strong rugby league tradition that is so important in Leigh.

I also love the fact that there is a park run at Pennington Flash.

you know you are in leigh when you see this guy!!!

Isn't that the mayor.

When god made the earth he had to put its arsehole somewhere so he painted it red and white, stuck it by the side of the east lancs and called it leigh (leyth).

And theyr'e shit at rugby league as well.
