Lending money

I lent a mate who was on his arse some money back in August
A four figure amount
He told me he’d give it me back in a couple of days as he was selling a property, had problems with a bank account etc etc
Cut a long story short I finally got my money back this week along with a big drink on top for being patient and not giving the lad hassle
Tbh I didn’t think I’d see the money or him ever again

A mate of mine lent his mate £20,000 a few years ago
Neither of them told their wife’s
A private agreement between two good friends
£500 a month was the agreed repayment method
After a few months the geezer who lent the money had a heart attack and passed away owing my mate £16/17,000 ish
He had to write the money off
Wounded !!!

Has anyone ever lent someone an amount of money and not received it back?
Years ago I met up with an old friend from school down in London. There was a bunch of us from Mcr down for a city game and we met up with a bunch of lads from school who had moved down. A bit of a reunion.

One lad I'd not seen in years asked to borrow £20. I lent it him and haven't seen or spoken to him since.

Just the way it is with some people.

I have a couple of times, but always draw up a contract in case anything does go wrong.

It never has, but it covers your arse should any issue arise.

Lad at work had a wife who needed emergency life saving surgery. She was going to be out of commission for a month or two. Fella didn’t have enough sick leave to cover it and was worried about losing the house that their 7 kids lived in with them!

Asked him what he needed. Said a couple or five grand. Delivered it to him, telling him this was a “union brother to union brother GIFT” (I was his local Chairman) and that he should only contemplate repaying if and when he felt able, or never at all. I said we wouldn’t talk of this ever again and it was over as far as I was concerned.

He was off for a couple of months. I saw him a month or two later and we shook hands and said Hi, but carried on as normal.

About 6 or 7 months later, a letter of thanks arrived with a check for the full amount. We never spoke of that, either, but I gave him a hearty handshake and “man hug” next time I saw him. The end.

When you lend money, write out a contract. If you don’t, you’re giving a gift and any return of funds is a return gift, not a requirement.

“Neither a lender nor a borrower be” are wise words.
