Good defenders do not come cheap because no club wants to lose them, you have to pay over the odds to get them, add in the english tax for stones and it's not necessarily all Txiki's fault and i'm not his greatest fan
It's the waste of such sums of money that could (in the FFP budget) be put to other positions. Is it practical to have 5 top level defenders competing for places? Is the thinking really that we need that for challenging in 4 comps?
I see your point but they can't tell how a player is going to react in the Premiership. Look at Boateng!! Mangala and oatamendi were excellent in there respective leagues. Hindsight is a wounderful thing. But we have to buy them and see how they work out.
I don't even think Mangala and Ota have been certified flops as some make out. Mangala has been very dodgy at times yes but he's young and it can be coached out of him. His major problem (and if Txiki or even Pellers didn't see this speaks very bad of them) is that he creates way too much space for the attacker when it's not needed. It appears as if he knows he has the pace to catch up a player so takes risks he shouldn't be doing by jumping in or backing off too much, which generally allows the striker to create space and take a shot on goal (which often ended as a goal). If he can fix this he'd immediately become a much more solid defender. Otamendi's issue is going to ground, though he is actually very effective most of the time with it (and you could argue he's playing to his strengths) when it doesn't come off he looks a complete tit. Otherwise he is actually a very good defender, that is just where he could improve and I'm sure Pep could help there. Neither of them have the defensive organisational skills that Demi or Kompany have though, which is blindingly obvious when they partner each other. Demi did seem to forgo this responsibility in his last season with us unfortunately I should point out, but before last season he was excellent at it and clearly helped Mangala a lot.

What I'm saying is, they aren't the lost causes that seems to be the impression at the moment. I realise there is other long-term (and short-term) planning in our transfer considerations though, but still, it seems poor planning previously.

Out of all the players mentioned over the past few weeks, this is the guy I want city to purchase
