We had 4 main points that needed addressing from last season,
1, Our away form
2, Goals against
3, Coming from behind
4, Goals scored from set plays
Hughes has with the signings to date addressed 2 of the 4 but until we sign a 2nd CB we will remain weak when it comes to goals against and goals scored from set plays, Lescott addresses both issues at once and provides cover at LB.
That's absolutely correct. I would also add that we have suffered from having a right sided centre half on the left side of the back 2 since Distin left. It's not essential but it helps, and your point about filling in at left back is a good one too.
If we get Lescott I wouldn't be surprised to see Garrido leave.
In terms of goals against I dont think lescott would make that significant an improvement in this area and certainly not 20million worth. Hughes has already gone a long way towards addressing our defensive issues by signing toure, a cb who can actually play a bit of football, has a great range of passing and can provide decent ball for the midfield, and barry who can dictate the tempo in the middle of the park. These two will allow us to hold onto the ball far more effectively cutting out all those times last year where an aimless long ball forward would come straight back at us. Not to mention what Ade and Tevez will provide in this respect by being able to hold onto the ball upfront. This should seriously reduce the number of goals we concede.
Set pieces, both for and against, are certainly an issue and lescott would probably be a big improvement here but at the same time a lot of this comes down to coaching which he can't have an effect on and we should improve offensively anyway due to barry's dead ball ability and ade in the air
Left-sided CB i dont think is that important, most teams dont have one and although dunne may at times look uncomfortable on the left, ned seems to be comfortable playing anywhere across the back four. Garrido is ok as cover for bridge, hes not half as bad as people make out and mcgivern could also do a job there.
Overall i just dont see lescott as making a significant enough improvement to the squad to warrant a 20 million transfer fee. Even if the fee was considerably less i still wouldn't be particularly in favour of the transfer due to what it would mean for our promising young defenders
If we were to sign him our first choice back four would be:
richards/zab toure lescott bridge
now in a season where we have no european commitments how many starts do you see ned and vk (or richards as cb, which is where i see him playing long term although you might disagree) getting unless we have a serious injury problem? Is this any good for their development? Is lescott even much better than them at the moment? do you not think they have to potential to develop into better players than lescott?
also bear in mind that as long as dunne is here there is a good chance that Hughes will use him ahead of ned and vk reducing their game time even further
