Great poetry but I hate the wristbands mate, I suppose it's my catholic principles, the poppy in the lapel is good enough , we dont want to turn it into a celeb cause. It's never been about the money just the giving thanks and taking 2 minutes out of our selfish lives to honour our glorious dead
For me it's a very personal day when I remember them that died for me and mine, the thought that pretty soon not one person will be alive who fought in the great war is incredibly depressing. They will never be forgotten , my 10 year old knows all about the day

Not wanting to turn this in to a debate but.....

I dont think you understand how much difference the money from the sales of the poppies makes. If all people can do is give their 2 minutes then thats all they can give. The fact is that there are too many that could give and dont.
I dont understand how your catholic principles can determine the wearing of a wristband.

I'm catholic in the sense that I dont like showey signs of giving, I was brought up to believe that donations always should be anonymous.
IMO the poppy with it's simple elegance is a wonderful symbol a fitting emblem of it's cause. It captures perfectly the cause represented , these wristbands which are 2 a penny for various causes mean very little. There's a story behind the flower and if people dont know the story how can they respect it?

I'm sorry if it offends but it's how I feel , I dont blame the charity for trying to appeal to the masses more I'm just saddened that it has gone the way of every over commercial charity.
It wont stop me giving of course but why dilute it's symbolism?

Younger people need to be educated more on how much lads my age actually gave their lifes for me to live.

The world has moved on but we cannot forget. My grandad stormed normandy with his bren gun and liberated treblinka. He was a great man and never went into detail about what he had witnessed.

Respect.

But we have forgotten. That for me is the the really sad thing.

WW1 was an uttelry pointless war yet the politicians deflect blame by getting us to focus on the ordinary soldiers who gave their lives in their millions for nothing.

And if those very same politiicians had remembered the dangers of a world war then WW2 could have been avoided at very little human cost and millions wouldn't have died in battle or in places like Belsen and Treblinka.

Some wars are undoubtedly morally justified but even now we seem to be unable to distinguish. Instead of our solemn remembrance of those sent to their deaths, we should put the party leaders in the stocks and pelt them with rotten fruit.

Thats the thing with politicians we are just a number to them. They made some of the best propaganda ever to get young lads to give their lives up. If Neville chamberlain would of had the bollocks to stand upto hitler before he became powerful millions would be alive today.

great post and a great cause. For all those who believe war is unecessary, always question how long their memory is because attrocities are allowed to occur when those with the ability fail to act.

Its a shame that many of the horrors of both world wars have been echoed many times since then. It seems no matter how strong the resonance of suffering sounds, humans will always treat each other with little or no humanity

So what exactly was "necessary" about the First World War? Becasue of that war, the Second became inevitable once France (& England) failed to astand up to Hitler in the mid 30's.

Even Churchill, when asked in 1939 what the war should be called, replied "The unnecessary war".
