Skegness ‘levelling up’? Build a new pier for a property developer. Can’t get a bus or a train there though.

this thread sums it all up.

Gove was feeble this morning when challenged that "more money" was more accurately "9% less money in real terms since 12 years ago".

As ever, misrepresenting what something really means to people. It seems absolutely required.

I'd quite like the Labour Party to commit to providing real figures rather than carefully curated figures with the context removed. I doubt any party really wants to though, as it would later expose failings, but I expect some plans to fail - I get more irritated when someone lies about the failings.

I did notice that there have been no aims, targets or objectives given out. So that they can’t be held to account for not meeting them. Just ‘levelling up’ which is meaningless as it was intended to be.

And they want 10 years to do it. So in reality nothing will be done by the time you next get to vote!

Indeed, tell people the truth. If England wants to level up and rebuild areas it has failed, then people need to know the price and should be expected to pay for it. Germans had to pay the Soli tax of 5% for nearly 30 years, but that was easier to sell when the partition could be blamed on the war and, to an extent, on external factors. Much harder to sell when the reasons for any tax are almost entirely self-inflicted by successive governments.

Govts have been promising to ‘level up’, create regional economic powerhouses, improve local infrastructure, etc., since the dawn of time.

They then do the exact opposite.

I understand your frustration.

I work trains into Skegness and see the massive potential for growth and investment.

I've spoken to company directors, network rail and local councillors about increasing the services and improving the station facilities to allow increases in capacity and sell the town as a great holiday resort.

All I get is patronising messages about how they all agree but none of them want to pay for it!

Since 2010 more like. However we don't have any figures yet, and even when we do we won't know how it will be awarded, the bidding criteria etc. The large capital projects were never funded out of local authority mainstream budgets, they were always additional funding pots.

It isn't just about funding though there are reforms planned, however the devil is in the detail rather than leaked headlines.
indeed 2010.

60p in the pound cut from government grants to fund local services.

Sound familiar??
A bit like an ‘oven-ready’ deal which they signed up to without a plan, or any intention of sticking to it, just to get their grubby hands on power.
How far can this shiny bauble take them?

yet another sticking-plaster on a gaping wound. The Met stretching out the "investigation", buying time whilst murdoch and friends distract and divert providing a smoke-screen for the cabinet of corruption that leads the tory partyparty. "Levelling-up" would require a 180 degree u-turn to what they have been doing for 400 years...Ideologically impossible, completely out of the question to the hard-core tory grandees, and their russian backers. Not named londongrad for nothing.
The poll-tax attempted implementation kicked off national riots, the latest piss-taking of the general public over non-isolating mps will not. Until enough tory mps put conscience over loyalty to the most corrupt cabinet in history, the agony will continue.....not holding my breath.
More like salt in a gaping wound. They have as much desire to level things up, as I have of going bald and supporting Rangers. Thats zero.

Why is there any debate?
anything this government proposes it will do is a lie. Levelling up? The results will be the same as the last 10 years - drops in living standards, increased poverty, more inequality. That’s what you get with a Tory government. Oh, and pitiful investment in transport infrastructure. You get that too.
Divide and rule, the stock-in-trade of the tories.
The very meaning of the word ‘conservative’ includes the dislike of change and the maintenance of those at the top.
Since they began it has been the same, setting people against each other whether socially or financially, and claiming to be the only ones to correct this.
Culminating in the biggest deliberate act of division and and lies ever seen in this country.
Brexit.

Everything this Nasty Party do is a con. Take £bns off councils, give them back a few £m and we are supposed to be grateful. All a distraction. They will send a minister around the country to different places each day to be there for the news and that is all we will talk about for weeks. Party? What party?

simple fact is they have blown it - in the last 2 years they have been conned out of £4.3bn that they want to write off. A further £8.7bn wasted on useless gear. And £37bn on a track and trace system that did neither and seems to have disappeared. Thats £50bn there. Enough to "level up" sort HS2. sort the Brexit border mess - whatever they wanted to do - instead they and their mates and their party got rich off the cash that should have been laying down Johnsons legacy

I am looking forward when the difference between Kensington and Middlesbrough will be invisible - frankly I'll take Kensington being levelled down for the laughs
Bit harsh. There are parts of Kensington, it's north, that make Middlesbrough look like Monte Carlo. :-o

They've been rather cunning in airing much of this before any public inquiry into the handling of the pandemic is formed and its remit decided.
