Leverkusen (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Just got back

For some reason I’d paid to watch the first team play but ended up watching the reserves

Madness by Pep , a win today then we’d need one win from three games

Now we need two wins with one against Madrid away or the other in ice station Zebra

Bizarre

A win on Saturday will soften the blow but a light has been shone on some of the back up players that doesn’t bode well for a long hard winter

Fresh players pre match but you wouldn’t have thought it having watched them. Several well off the pace.

Other than a Cherki free kick, their keeper was rarely troubled.

Two poor goals given away. Disappointing evening all round.

TEN changes was negligent, irresponsible, arrogant and fucking idiotic. Just back after 2.5 hrs sat freezing watching that performance. I’m fuming, it panned out exactly as I expected once I’d seen that line up. Nobody on the pitch looked like they had a clue in that first half, and it was only marginally better second half. We struggled to string a couple of passes together all night.
I hate to say it again, but I’m sorry, Oscar Bobb and Savinho are nowhere near good enough. Created nothing between them. Leverkusen have Echeverri and aren’t playing him; get him back in January and give him the minutes Savinho or Bobb has and I’m 100% sure he will produce more. Ait Nouri and Lewis were awful, as were Reijnders and Marmoush. Too many changes, creates a lack f cohesion and fluidity. Shocking tonight and it’s mainly down to the unnecessary, disrespectful and idiotic team selection. We could end up like last season, in the play offs. Our next game is likely to be a loss too, then we’re in the thick of it when we needn’t have been. On you this one Pep.

You can make a few changes without seriously compromising your chances but 10 changes isn't ridiculous, it's downright fucking stupid irrespective of what you've won in the past.
And making wholesale changes is never going to work if you play a complex form of football as we do. Get it wide, ping crosses to a big lump and have someone following up on the edge if it gets headed away. Simple football can be played by squad players, a complex inter-passing game can't.

The problem also lies in the midfield, I like Tijanni and think he brings the technical and physical presence we’re use to, along with Nico, but there is some creative element missing. Something is off with the system at the moment, because I don’t remember this team ever being so heavily reliant on bits and pieces of magic to win consistently. Certainly Kevin is an almost irreplaceable players and he came up with so many moments of magic, and we did start to lean on him a bit for the creativity and assists but still when we would sit players out the system was so good, players could just slot in and the system would make the chances. Whether Haaland was out or whether Aguero was out.
You play a totally changed team, the entire group might suffer. Pep has spoken about how Savinho for example has the ability but needs self belief. He eroded that massively tonight. Probably likewise with Reijnders.

Will likely drop out of top 8 after tomorrow’s round of games and with 2 difficult away games to come could easily find themselves in the play-offs and 2 extra games, cue Pep complaining about playing every 2 or 3 days

Had we taken our chances - after 4 mins, the reindeer’s effort and then 2 Harlan’s chances we would have won 4-2. It’s all about taking your chances ( again)

Guardiola and the club should be apologising to every poor **** that paid for a ticket tonight.

Taking the absolute piss with that starting 11 - and a great example of the poor quality in our squad from 12 - 25. ffs respect the opposition - we are miles off being able to think that lineup would win tonight.

it blows my mind that a manager that coached Messi at his peak and all the great wingers Bayern and City have had under his watch can look at Bobb and Savinho every week and not wonder wtf is going on.

More concerning though is watching his after match press conference. Pep looked clueless - like he felt he had to give fringe players a chance to play to stop them being upset.

Ffs grow a pair of balls and play a team to win the game - not cause you are afraid of the players not playing.

A great point and let’s also note that if this was indeed Pep’s revenge on the first team for the Toon performance (which I doubt but let’s say I’m wrong), how the hell does the team have the chance to prepare for an opponent who they haven’t seen before compared to Prem sides? My mind remains boggled.

I said same about Bobb and Savio when we were walking back to the car, does Pep not watch the game back? Do analysts not give him lowlight reels of them to see how shit they are? Or is he just too damned arrogant? Fuck knows.

i hope people dont forget Stones in the critisicm. Another over the hill player who should be waved goodbye at the end of the season along with Bernardo and Ake. the defending was badly positioned and we were so deep making the first challenge.
I’ll state upfront that I don’t think Stones and Ake should get new contracts, and Bernardo is going to leave.

That said, Stones was absolutely not the reason for this loss, and was one of the better players tonight, imho. Gonzales was left alone in the middle of midfield, and Leverkeusen were very, very good at playing around him and finding that open player in front of our back four. From there, the CBs were both outnumbered and outrun!

Ake has been a great player, but he is not the profile we need and we should cash in on him in January or the summer. It’s unforgivable that he let his man step in front of him, instead of Ake attacking the ball, and allowing the forward to get the second.

Bernardo has been an absolute standout this season and a key player in some of our best performances. Accordingly, he will move to Benguca (or wherever) with my deepest appreciation.

Not for one minute going to defend some of the performances, however some of the players who are getting pelters on here were hung out to dry by the tactics/set up tonight.

Lewis played as part of a two man midfield which was completely out numbered, over run and bypassed by Leverkusen and Pep did nothing to change that.

Reijnders, who really has had a poor start to his City career….his big strength is making runs from deep, played as a second striker in front of a midfield that was already being out numbered.

Why couldn’t Pep or the bench see this and change it !

What is really strange from Pep is that he has previously said many times that he would like a team full of midfielders…..today we played the majority of the match with only two.

Thought I’d got the wrong midweek & we were playing Brentford in the LC, after I heard the team news! May be rest 2 or 3 & give some game time but not 10 changes. Don’t know how many chances we need to give Lewis & Savinho - both not good enough for the level we want to be. Same with Trafford for me but no chance with either goal!

Jury’s out on Ait Nouri, Reijnders, Bobb & Marmoush - all looked poor though could be rustiness! Along with Ake & Kusanov looking rusty.

Nico was left with far too much ground to cover, though not sure he is top drawer - starting to depress myself with this analysis!

At least Jonny Stones played decent apart from the odd mistake first half!

First team virtually picks itself now!
Somebody should make a compilation of Nico Gonzalez running back towards his own goal in the first half tonight. I’ve never seen a player run so slowly. He also plods around flat footed like I would when I played Sunday league football cos I was fat and unfit as fuck. For his sake I hope he is injured cos if that is how he moves fully fit then he’s got an issue.

He is one of a couple of players that we have been so desperate to succeed that we have become blind to the fact that he probably just isn’t good enough. I think Khusanov is another, we are desperate for him to succeed but how many more times is he gonna give the ball away, be skipped past cos he dives in, or be at the scene of the crime when we concede.

Those two weren’t even the worst performers. Savinho, fuck me get rid of him. I’ve been saying it for a year now he is awful. Oscar Bobb, another I’m so desperate to see succeed but it’s getting to the point that he does nothing. He cannot physically kick the ball with his right foot. Same as Savinho funnily enough.

Then there is Reijnders, he is the new Mangala. We thought we’d signed a world beater but now what does he offer?!

Marmoush is another. His only defence is that he hasn’t had much game time but what does he actually do?! He might score a screamer and it looks great but if everything else you contribute is dog shit what is the point.

All of last season all anyone spoke about was how physical modern football was and that it is becoming more and more about athletes and working hard off the ball. We have then gone and put a side out with two players only just slightly over 5 foot tall who get leaned off the ball everytime they receive it. Savinho, Reijnders, and Marmoush who all lose the ball and fall over as soon as they feel the breath of an opponent let alone any physical contact. In fact Savinho was going down when no one was within 15 yards of him tonight.

How have we still got the same problem of being horrendous when a game is physical with and without the ball a full year on and after £500m spent on new players?!

Surely Pep who has managed the greatest players in the history of football can look at a player and see that they cannot play for a team that wants to challenge for the PL and CL. Maybe the club don’t see themselves at that level anymore.
