Leverkusen (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Wonder what James French the set piece coach gets paid? Came from the dippers and clearly hasn't got a clue about corners because they're shocking. Foden just floats them in ffs. Recruitment overall has been poor last few seasons and I wonder who's to blame......Pep, Txiki, Vianna? All no doubt. Savinho, Rjeinders, Phillips, Nunes not good enough, add Bobb and Lewis. Jury out on Khusanov, Gonzalez, Marmoush, Cherki. £30M spent on Reis......will we see him again. Foden can't play the number 10 role. Movement in the team is shocking with no one capable of playing balls through the lines although chicken and egg situation I guess. They've even ballsed the goalkeeping position up.......what's Ortega up to these days? Oh and there's some bloke called Ait Nouri who won a lottery ticket to play for City. We'll still be better than most but miles away from three or four seasons ago. And Pep doesn't help totally disrespecting Leverkusen last night.

I think Savinho running 40 yards with the ball before falling over, unchallenged :-), sums up the whole evening.
Worth the admission money to see the disappointed look on his face when there was no-one around to blame.

"Hello? Is that Tottenham Hotspur? Just coming back to you on that 'Savinho' offer....."

Too late its already done.
At least we took getting beat on the chin in the dark days of being shit. And the banter and camaraderie was 10X better than nowadays. Too many fans are too expectant, Unfortunately.

As for the match, pretty much 10 outfield players doing their own thing without cohesion or a captain pulling the strings.

Very true and I'm definitely one of those who thinks that we should only make 1-2.changes for every game,.regardless of opponent or competition. That way, Marmoush or Ait Nouri might find it easier to slot in

I suspect that Pep has looked at the new CL format and how PSG won it last season despite a poor start
He probably prioritised Leeds and then next Tuesday's game at Fulham which is fair enough, but did it really require so many changes?

He's admitted in his post match press conference he fucked up big time. He took a gamble and it backfired. Id like to think he won't do it again, but its Pep so who knows?

Reading Pep Confidential about his first year at Bayern and I've just gotten past the game where they got killed 4-0 by Madrid in Munich. I dont feel too bad about this game as a result.

In every season I feel like you can find at least one game where Pep well and truly fucks it with tactics or selection. We got utterly embarrassed by SOUTHAMPTON during the treble season.

Throwing in 10 fresh faces for a home UCL game was a choice to say the least. And it backfired. We let in a soft goal in the first half and proceeded to struggle with a low block. Its all stuff we've seen before.

There's a few players who I think maybe need to move on, make up your mind on who I'm referring to, but I'm not jumping off the bridge over this.

If you listen to everything pep said after the game he gives you an explanation why he made the changes and he even said he was probably wrong picking that team..

I understand why he picked it it’s the players who let Pep down..
I think its a bit of both. A lot of those players Pep picked last night have hardly any minutes in a City shirt over the last few months. It was always going to be difficult for them to find much rhythm and it totally showed. We all saw that team sheet and saw what was coming and I'm sure Pep knew the risk as well. I doubt anyone is surprised at how bad it was and that kinda makes it all the more frustrating.

We seem to have this kind of period every year (always feels like November time), even when we've had our great sides, and we generally find a way through it. I think Leeds will be very different and hopefully this ones quickly forgotten.

Good comment. I am very annoyed with Pep. But this is part of his nature.

Time for someone to take charge and deliver a Fernandinho style one way transmission.

"I'm transmitting, you fucking lot are receiving!"

Definitely.

I know you can't replace players like for like, but last night's team really needed a Kompany/Ferna/Rodri type who would just take control. This happened a lot last season. Lot of followers, no leaders. Its not a talent issue. Same with the attack, however i see Cherki over time becoming the KDB type to actually want the ball and to drive things forward.

A really bad move to make so many changes, which Pep has admitted.

What's really damaging is that it erodes a lot of fan faith in those players because as a collective they were absolutely miles off it. It felt like a really alarming illustration of how poorly the club has invested in new players in recent times.

Very few of those on the pitch seem to play in the manner Pep would want them to. Which either means he's going and the club's buying for the next man or he's not been involved as much as he should have been. We don't seem to have any clear structure or system without Haaland in the side. It's just like they're told to run and see what happens - much like watching my lad in his U7s side!

Correct, it's a bit unfair on the second string players to play them all at the same time - that is, if you are one that is actually a better standard than the others it's hard to show because them playing poorly around you drags your game down too.

Players I'm quickly losing patience with;-

Savinho
Bobb

They come here for an all expenses paid coaching coarse - two of Pep's previous students are managers of the two teams above us in the league.
