Leverkusen (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

The game and the result were extremely unlucky; how many chances did Leverkusen have apart from the goals, maybe one or two?

Absolutely everything fell their way plus a huge amount of luck, while we had a huge amount of bad luck. It’s not just about XG, it’s about the countless exchanges we had in the box, the loose balls that, sometimes purely out of bad luck, didn’t turn into a goal or a direct threat. That escapes XG, but it’s still part of reality and of the probability of a given result in a match. It was practically the same with Newcastle, where in my opinion there was no real symmetry – away at a really tough ground we were, overall, the better team, we had much better chances; at the very least Foden (from Cherki’s pass) and Haaland twice (from Doku’s pass when Pope came out, and from O’Reilly’s pass when he hit Pope) had to score, plus there were no cards for obvious fouls and no penalties given, including the obvious one on Foden.

The rebuild is ongoing and on the right track. Structurally we look decent, we’re able to attack quicker. Pep and the staff aren’t going to put the ball in the net themselves. We’re playing in a way that creates chances. The players just need to be more efficient, period.

We need Rodri, we need a few players in much better form. But they won’t get into better form without playing. That’s why Pep decided that at home against Leverkusen, with our overall situation in the UCL being pretty good, we’d cope and that it was necessary to let the reserves play. It’s about their form, but also their morale. And their morale, as part of the team, affects the whole team. A football team is an organism – complex, because it’s made up of many people. On top of that, a special kind of people: top-class specialists in their profession with big egos. You have to manage that constantly, day in, day out, to keep them stimulated. City are fighting and will keep fighting on all fronts, the whole squad has to be ready for battle, even at the cost of slip-up defeats like yesterday’s.

The reward will be that over time Omar Marmoush or Khusanov or others will look better, and that could be crucial. Yesterday Bobb already played pretty well; examples like that will keep multiplying, we have a high-quality squad. The sadness is understandable, it’s a second defeat in a row, but the reasons for the loss are clear to me – it will get better.
At Newcastle, I thought we played well until the final action when we made a poor final pass / shot when I thought we were about to score.

I understand the point you make about being fair to people at the football club but making 10 changes doesn't give people a fair chance and Pep should have known that. I think that Marmoush and Khusanov will become big players for City in time but in spite of games like yesterday, not because of it.

There were very few positives to that defeat. I could pick out Stones and O'Reilly perhaps as players who performed well. The reasons for the loss are clear to me too. Too many changes.

A number of posters in this thread feeling sorry for themselves because they travelled or paid money for hotels and trains. The simple solution is to not support a team who play in a different city or if you're from Manchester, don't move away. They deserve no more credit for attending last night than the lad who can see Mary D's from his kitchen window.
If that criteria was our only suppor tno need to build the north stand extension or the south come to think of it

Rubbish. That made some of last season’s performances look thrilling.

Embarrassing. On Pep but also he gave 9 outfield players to stake a claim for their place in the side and they failed.

But he’s also put a Carabao Cup side out in the Champions fucking League. Terrible management and unwarranted arrogance based on the past 18 months.

A lot of them were fucking terrible. And that’s being kind. Genuinely shameful some of them and they shouldn’t be anywhere near the side again.

How Savinho stayed on for 90 minutes is beyond me too. That alone should be raising massive massive questions about the coaching staff.
He gave these guys a chance and they looked lightweight. Worst of all, Leverkusen had two attempts on target - both went in. We had more than enough clear chances and opportunities to make chances in and around their box. I'm in the East Stand in Level 2 two or three yards in from the corner flag, and I lost count of the number of times our players slipped over going down our right - Savinho especially.

I don't think people are feeling sorry for themselves, they are sorry that for a lot of effort and expense they got fuck all in return after continually listening to Pep call City fans out for not attending, while sending essentially a reserve team out

But the cost of them supporting a team in a different city has fuck all to do with it.

Agree - we were screwed over at Newcastle. Khusanov is a serious talent and Marmoush might be a scorer of great goals than a great goalscorer. When everyone's fit, is Khusanov going to get a get a game while Nunes gets better and better at RB? How is Marmoush going to be a regular starter if Phil and Cherki are playing well?

People and families brought up in Manchester move out of the area for many reasons. Work, schools, looking after parents and grandparents etc.

Your first line rubbishes my post and your second is kind of what I was saying.

Why do you think someone who travels from Birmingham deserves more credit than a Manchester lad for example?
You don't want to offer a bit more credit to someone who's travelled from Birmingham, Plymouth, Timbuktu to attend the game with all the associated effort, expense, pissing about then fill your boots pal. I've got no problem doing it. People move away then keep coming back to watch the blues, top notch.

More? No. Some credit? Absolutely. I give credit to everyone who attends the match. But when Pep has a brain fart, I don't see the need for these supporters who live in other places to whine about travel costs. They chose to live somewhere away from Manchester City.

I know that. I'm one of them. But I chose to do it, so when City don't perform as I'd hope, I don't feel sorry for myself having travelled to watch them.

You can look at it through the lens of Game of Thrones. Normally in a game like this, Kev and Erling might come on late in their armour and weaponry and start winning the swordfights before delivering the fatal strikes to the evil enemy - Madrid for example. The swordfights finish with Kev shoving his valyrian steel sword into the knackers of Madrid. Erling and Kev are victorious and stand over the vanquished Madrid all majestic.

But Kev is now in Italy and there will never be another like him. His attitude is always that 'I can turn this around and make the opposition suffer' - proper balls out footy. Invariably, Kev achieves this. Phil and Erling apart (and hopefully soon, Doku and Gonzalez) who in the side is going to eyeball the opposition and make them suffer? Cherki is exceptionally talented - no doubt about that. For me, now, it's all about the mentality - we'll see what our newer signings are made of. They're at City now - not at 'Do your best' smaller clubs.

Nice one. I have an unopened packet of Skittles on my desk from over a month ago.

Fucking hell are you having a bad day or something? What's with the slagging off fellow blues' who are rightly pissed off about last night? If I'd got off my arse and walked from a flat by the side of Mary D's ,to quote yourself and paid good money to watch that shit show in the freezing cold, i'd be pissed off and i would only have had to walk ten minutes to be home, with no additional travel or hotel costs. If I'd paid for travel and a hotel on top, expecting to see the majority of the first team in a champions league game we had to win, then seeing the reserves were playing and we lost as a result I'd be livid. A bit more understanding of that fact wouldn't go amiss, or just keep your thoughts to yourself if you think they're making a fuss about nothing. I sometimes despair of people on here.

It was a 2nd XI. The first XI beat Liverpool and Man Utd comprehensively.

Why are so many fans focusing on Savinho? He was no better or worse than anyone else. Ait Nouri has barely played due to injury. Rodri, Fernandinho and Barry are 3 of the best midfielders who have ever played in the Premier League and you are using them as a benchmark for Gonzalez who was not intended to replace Rodri but to act as cover.

Dross really isn't fair is it? You don't get away with playing a 2nd XI in the Champions League especially when that XI goes out and plays tippy tappy nervous football for 45 minutes.

I agreed with your point about it being on Pep. I got that team selection and I was gutted when I read it. I knew what would happen and I think what is making so many City fans mad is that it was senseless. We've needlessly put ourselves under pressure now.

If there was another top manager available at this moment, I would want Pep out but there isn't and the fact is that he's like Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde. Most times we get wonderful Pep but every now and then we get some stupid unfathomable decisions
I fair and measured response so I'll do the same in kind to your points.

Our first 11 did indeed beat the rags and the scousers, but it also lost to Spurs, Villa, Brighton and Newcastle, all decent sides but none of them great. Perfectly sums up where we are as a team for me. Up and down.

With regards to Savinho, for me personally he was terrible yesterday. I said to my son at HT, him Ait Nouri and Bobb where the worst players on the park. 2 of them got hooked. Rodri, Fernandinho and Barry are indeed the benchmark I'll hold Nico G too. The lad cost the best part of 60m pound. Like i say, he's improving and hopefully he'll get there. He may not have been bought as Rodri's replacement but he currently is as Rodri can't get fit.

Dross may have been a bit harsh, but I saw someone say that starting lineup cost the best part of £400m with 2 academy players in that cost nothing. Stones and Ake aside whohave obviously proved good value for money, I'm sorry but any team costing that much should be able to compete with anybody. The fact you said yourself that your knew what would happen and many others felt the same says to me a lot has been spent on not very good footballers.

As for Guardiola I've never once said I want him out, he's been poor at times these last 18 months, but he's obviously earned time and then some.
