Levon Helm.R.I.P.

That's a shame. Saw them at Wembley in (I think) 1976 with CSN&Y and Joni Mitchell. One of the best days of my life. If I remember correctly he was the only American in The Band as all the others were Canadian. He was Ronnie Hawkins original sidekick and they went to Canada together from Arkansas.

A very talented man indeed and a very, very good drummer. RIP Levon.

Take a load off, Levon x

Remember seeing The Last Waltz when I was in my teens and it blew me away, still got a copy of the triple album on vinyl to this day. Here's a little tribute to the great man.

"Levon" is a song written and recorded by Elton John with lyrics written by Bernie Taupin. It is from John's fourth album Madman Across the Water and was recorded on February 27, 1971.

Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics for "Levon", was inspired by The Band's co-founder, drummer, and singer Levon Helm to name the title character after him. The Band was apparently Elton John's and Bernie Taupin's favourite group in those days. The "Alvin Tostig" mentioned in the song (Levon's father) is, according to Taupin, merely fictional.

Elton John and his civil partner, David Furnish, named their son "Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John", in part as he was born on Christmas Day 2010 (as Levon was born on Christmas Day in the song).

Taken from what I consider to be Elton's finest album 'Madman Across the Water'
