Liam Neeson

Only thought of it?

He was waiting for any excuse to go through with it.
But didn't. Having bad thoughts isn't a crime and frankly, if he'd been that desperate to actually do it you'd imagine he'd have successfully found a black guy, they aren't unicorns. We only even have his word that any of it even happened (not that it seems like something to lie about, but then again it doesn't seem like something anyone would ever bring up anyway, so who knows with this mental)

Either way, he didn't actually do anything, so I can't see how anything will happen to his career when there are people thriving in Hollywood who actually did things. Mel Gibson still gets work ffs

It's a strange one, for sure. He was regarded as one of the very finest of his generation but after Natascha Richardson died, he seemed to make a decision to eschew 'artistic' roles and take the money for action thrillers... mostly quasi-revenge thrillers, as it happens. Or thrillers where an ordinary guy is forced into the role of action hero.... old school stuff, terrorists and sadistic kidnappers - Of all of these, the only ones I liked at all were The Grey, and A Walk Amongst The Tombstones - both of which were passable. To me, the rest was generic stuff, often quite unpleasant - particularly the Caullet-Serra films.

It's always been a little sad to me that he's pursued these violent macho roles, I can't see how he needed the money. But I definitely remember reading that someone close to him said it he had made a conscious decision to handle his career differently after his wife's death. Maybe he just wants to keep working and finds it easier to play the same role than explore characters and use himself to portray issues on screen.

This being a promo just dunno what to make of it all. The fact he used the phrase 'Black Bastard' sticks out like a sore thumb.

I do agree with him that we are all hypocrites, that we have an innate response to racial differences. It doesn't mean you get away with treating people differently, just that it's one of those human traits... like jealousy, like lying. We would be better off without them, and in fact it is our duty to learn how to manage them, but it's crazy to insist that humans can just pretend we don't have certain tendancies when they can be demonstrated and measured.

But... anyway.... apparently the film is really good. And Hollywood are huge hypocrits. Roman Polanski is still feted, for example. I suppose the easy comparison is Mel Gibson, but he really is a 'complicated' guy, and undoubtedly difficult to work with. He was getting his own thing going as director and producer... easy to imagine that the power-brokers thought they could do without him. Neeson is the current go-to Action Thriller lead, miles ahead of Gerard effing Butler, and I think there is enough evidence of a cosmopolitan outlook in what he's said in the past, so I doubt very much he'll be black balled.

To be fair the Yanks promote free speech. There won't be anyone on here who haven't had thoughts of doing something they shouldn't. The only difference is that he's decided to speak about it. Probably in hindsight a stupid decision but hardly the end of the world.

Just wondering how many of my 'friends' on here would have screamed about my having an 'agenda' had I have started this thread?

I wonder how many think about "Oooh, this is why there's a Black Lives Matter' movement!

Nah, nowt'll change there...

The whole evidence in question is coming from what he’s saying.

By the token of suggesting he’s not telling the truth in saying he’s now ashamed of it, you must also have to consider the whole thing is false.

“I was a racist 40 years ago and I’m ashamed” - he must be a racist now too.

It’s an odd way to accuse someone.

So, there quite a few holes in his story that only he will understand.
To that end, there's no point in starting a complex story, if there's more to it than what's said.

What a bizarre comment to make...he’s either a nut job or on some kind of strange medication.

But Oh the faux indignation in the media.... I for one will never watch any of his films....etc etc

Well, that depends on IF you believe that people ARE offended. Neeson has come across as a person who'd never offended anyone, so if you take that notion away, there's a 'shock to the system' people have to deal with. I, myself, considered this angle deeply.

We all have a little in us. Popping to the "chinky". Having an "Indian" when it's from Bangladesh. Calling Magicpole a jock.

So... when you say 'we', are you talking about White people cos, personally, I know of no one of minority status that would use those words, never mind popping over to 'Whitey's' for a beer or whatever.

To be fair the Yanks promote free speech. There won't be anyone on here who haven't had thoughts of doing something they shouldn't. The only difference is that he's decided to speak about it. Probably in hindsight a stupid decision but hardly the end of the world.

So, finally I agree on this post. Trauma does the strangest things to people and growing up in a [predominately] White area where you're existence is solely people like you, the only thing I can think of, is how he didn't come across any Black people, if that's area he went to!

Perhaps people said 'Good morning/ night' to him as he waited, patiently.

Perhaps his 'brooding and menacing' status warned those Black people away from him?

I dunno, Black people in a Black neighbourhood aren't really that hard to find...

Unless he was looking at night time...??
