Could fellow blues shed some light on what life was like back then and descirbe any experiences from the 70s and 80s as regards to nights out (is it a simlar experience to today?), match day routines, gigs and culture? Would they prefer the 70s/80s to today?

Although there are plenty of films, TV shows and music from the era I just can't get a jist of what it would be like and whether my generation of today would fit in. Were those days massively different from today with the PC/diverse world we live in and new technology available? Were people in general friendlier or more stubborn back then? Are the streets in general rougher or safer today?

Any stories and views would be much appreciated!

gigs were much easier to get tickets for!
used to go to the free trade hall at least once a week to see a band from 74 thru to 77
and the people who went were there because they liked the music, or wanted to see what they were like and not because it was an 'event'
seems its impossible to get tickets now, and when you do the people around you don't like the band and are there to be 'entertained' as part of their night out

pubs were a lot duller but friendlier places
no food in them so no kids!, but there was lots of smoke

I was born in 75'.

The world was dank and grey
but we had Fry's chocolate cream bars so all was well.

Remember our school being taken outside so we could see the Spaceshuttle on a plane fly over, and also Charles and Di's wedding, the WHOLE street had a huge party on a hot summer's day.Dont think that will ever happen again(maybe if England win the world cup tho)

My primary school years in Bradford (near to where COMS is) were spent during the 60's ...... the flower power days ........ i had an abacus counting frame at school (what the fuck's that i hear you cry?) ....... i used to wrap pitch around a lollystick , and play with magnets , for entertainment ........ and ride a makeshift bogie cart ( that had taken me all week to string together ) straight into the nearest lampost!!

Life seemed simpler ..... kind of uncomplicated ....... people seemed much friendlier within' tight knitted communities.

My teen years were spent in the 70's and i loved them ..... i started meeting girls and finding out what my 'mainspring' was actually for .... 1970's Hulme was an experience on the concrete flats where i lived ... music was brilliant ... i saw City win a trophy .. and the blackouts weren't something that i'll ever forget in an hurry ....... neither was my first wage packet , a healthy £7 per week!

We had no mobile phones or computers back then , but we made our own entertainment ..... mind you some of it got me into real trouble!

the eighties were alright ..... but i was married by then and getting older , and i didn't much care for that .... still don't come to that!

Certainly , in my opinion , the 70's were massively different from today ..... far better music , tv was probably better too at that stage ..... which is why the repeats of some programmes have lasted until the present day ...... and films were what they always have been , some good , some not so good ....... you daren't even think of admittin' that you were gay ...... and you still got 'punch-ups ' here and there , as you always have , but not the needless brutality that abounds today .... there was far more respect back then.

The 80's brought about things like punk rock and Madonna ... but was still an era far removed from today.

I remember the whole street having a party in '77 for the Queens Silver Jubilee (this was in the recently much maligned Moston by the way). I mean a proper party with tables all set out, party food and bunting and flags. Red white and blue evreywhere, must have took a lot of organising but I was only a kid so don't know about all that. I do know that sort of thing will probably never happen again. I have memories of lots of house parties and barbecues that involved pretty much the whole street during the 70s and 80's.

Although people generally were poorer, the world seemed a friendlier place back then.

And Dandelion and Burdock.

And power cuts, and strikes, and orangey brown wallpaper and curtains, and proper sherbert.

And no gadgets apart from a transistor radio.

Back in the 70s we thought we had it good. We were busy keeping up with all the things most people could afford for the first time, like calculators, VCRS, tape recorders, holidays abroad, a home phone, colour TV, washing machines, foreign foods from takeaways or restaurants and above all cars. If anything the rate of improvement in life back then was much faster than it is now and people enjoyed it.

Young people always tend to think that life must have been a bit primitive and dull before they came along. One day they'll have to tell their own children that life in 2010 was quite good even though people had to do without personal planes, holidays on the moon, Playstation 12s, 20ft wide colour TVs or whatever is the latest thing by then.
