I switched to ubuntu about 2-3 years and wouldn't go back now. I'm not a 'techie' as such but can get around a computer.
If your fairly confident in windows and can use Google then you shouldn't have a problem.
Ubuntu was a nightmare when I first got it, but its very user friendly now. Using Terminal is a load of gobbledygook (to me) but you can copy and paste most things from internet.
You can use wine for windows based software anyway or even run virtualbox to give you an actual windows base.
Thinking about it I'm sure you can put Virtualbox on windows and virtually run Ubuntu so you can give it a try without having to partition for dual booting.
But yes, its good.
And free.
