Maybe, maybe not. You could argue that June was assumed to be the end of the season and it had moved out, maybe his camp thought that would fly.

This is an exceptionail season due to the pandemic.

That is Messi's argument. It is not his fault that the season was extended because of covid19. Therefore his agreement to leave on a free should also have been extended. Sounds reasonable to me.
