Do we even know that this transfer rests on a 'meeting'? It seems to have been given great significance.

For me a meeting between Jorge Mendes and FCB was symbolic because it suggested compromise when hitherto Barca had been adamant that they would only discuss an extended deal.

I think a deal is there to be done because I think Messi will move on a free transfer if Barca don't settle but I don't see how this meeting has become so central to the media story.

Because they have nothing new to report on. That's why they've been telling us what Jorge Messi ordered for his lunch.
