Interesting quotes from Messi, but I expected nothing less really, he needed to get the media to take away some of the bad press hanging over Barcelona by killing any potential sale speculation and unease with Enrique.

Let's see how Barcelona's elections go and the rest of the season pans out, they could go two seasons without a trophy if they win nothing this season, Messi could likely look at the potential for next season if that happens.

Agreed sam,Mid season,I wouldn't expect him to say anything else either.
You only have to look at certain comments along the lines of "I wouldn't sell that lot a virus" to see how quickly things change.

I have no intentions of leaving for any team, not Chelsea nor Manchester City

That's that, then.

As exciting as the possibility of signing him was, I'm kinda glad. I'd rather spend the money on four really good players short term and scout our own superstar in the long term.

(It would have been nice to sign a superstar though!)

Didn't want him anyway

This - would much rather buy 4 great youngsters - isco, koke, pogpa and barkely and have a core for 5 years. He is 27 and has probably peaked.

Genuine question

How do you reckon Messi would do in the PL?

Personally I don't think he would be half as effective as he is in the Spanish League

Not saying he wouldn't be good...he would...but would he be good enough in relation to the outlay necessary to bring him here?

He'd be the best player in the league by far. No doubt about that.

However, any club signing him will have to make some immense reshaping of the team and club philosophy, as everything would have to go through Messi. But what would be the best for our team?
1) Getting Messi, or
2) Getting, at the same total cost or likely much less, players such as:
Reus
Koke
Pogba
a new LB
+ one or two further HQ additions.

I would vote for option 2, no matter how much I admire the little Argentinian and would love to see him wearing our shirt. If he gets injured than that's an obscene amount of money not giving us anything back.
He has, I believe, had his best years already, but will continue to be one of the two best players in the world for a few more years though.

Good players in the prem but wouldn't get anywhere near a world class 11.

The Times football correspondent Matt Hughes in Zurich: "Messi appears to leave door open to leaving Barcelona - "I'm not sure where I'll be next year," he said. "I've always said I'd like to end my career at Barcelona, but as Cristiano says only God knows the future."

Back on!

Barca are having the stadium re developed, what better legacy could Leo leave Barca than a stadium re vamp to drag it to one of the best in Europe. The Nou is a crumbling dive that badly needs sorting. Rumoured 200 million revamp and selling Messi would cover a huge part of that. This just maybe out of his hands, if he leaves with there blessing then i would say its a possibility he would leave.

It's never been on. He won't leave Barca.

And after just coming back from 4 days in Barcelona there is absolutely no way i would swap that place for Manchester

I know where he'll be next season and the season after that and the season after that, Barca.

He, and nobody before him and it will be a long long time until someone after him, will never get to the level Messi had in 2012.

To score 91 goals in a year is nothing short of phenomenal but it wasn't just the goal scoring, it was everything. He was absolutely amazing that year, he was up there with Michael Jordan, Phil Taylor and Muhammad Ali at their best in terms of sports superstar. And much like nobody touches Jordan now, 15 years on since he left the Chicago Bulls, I can see Messi still being viewed as (between 2009-2012) the best anyone has ever played football the same time after. Nobody touches Jordan for me not Kobe, not Lebron, nobody. I don't think anyone will touch Messi for a long time neither.

However he himself is never getting back to that level neither. He's still one of the best two players in the world, and ahead of the rest by a considerable distance, but he'll never be as good as he was in that 91 goal year and in the three years leading up to it.

We need to go down to South America (or South Manchester, but that won't happen) and find our own Messi, our own superstar that will always be associated with Manchester City FC like Colin Bell, Bert Trautmann and Eric Brook are. Messi will always be associated with Barça more than any club if he left them (which he's not going to).

From sky sports transfer centre:

Prior to the Ballon d'or award ceremony, Lionel Messi gave his thoughts on recent transfer speculation.

Lionel Messi has branded rumours he is set to leave Barcelona as “lies”.

There has been plenty of speculation over the Argentina forward’s future at the club, with suggestions he is unhappy with head coach Luis Enrique’s running of the club, and that he could be set for a move to the Premier League. But Messi has slammed the talk, saying he has no intention of leaving.

"I've heard stories I've spoken to Chelsea or [Man] City, that's all lies. I have taken this chance to deny it so that everyone knows the truth. I am grateful to be able to give my version of events."

He mentioned our name, thats good enough for me ;)

The only stumbling block is no Barca president wants to be "the man who let messi go".
If they didn't win every single match after there would be some pretty pissed off catalonians.

If he is not available this summer we should just fuck it off really.
The season after next he will be what 29?

Amazing player but not worth wanking over for the next 7 months.

I can't see the logic in option two. Many people on here seem to suggest a messi deal would finance itself, I don't buy that but fair enough. Option two your looking at spending around 150 million. There is no chance were going to spend 150 million in a transfer window with ffp in place.
