Little gems to visit in GREATER MANCHESTER by Little Gem.

Tatton Park in Knutsford. Great walking footpaths around lake (mere). Tatton hall. Deer herds/sheep. Tatton garden show in Summer. Utter tranquillity. Also the town is pretty good too. Looks like a Southern town in the North - like Portsmouth looks like a Northern town in the South. Great range of boozers. My favourite is the Lord Eldon. Ok it's in Cheshire rather than Gtr Manchester but still very accessible.

Oldham isn't everyone's cup of tea but the art gallery is fantastic, there's load of great parks and you're minutes from top pubs in Saddleworth. The town centre looks smarter than it has for years.
I will put the art gallery down as one to visit.
Is it close to any public transport links.

Excellent sum-up of Portsmouth there, particularly the tiled Southsea boozers. Best southern city by miles.

I went to school and sixth form in Oldham in the early 2000s. We used to go to the chippy in Tommyfield market all the time. One of the best chippies I’ve ever been to, and the oldest in the world apparently!
Think the chippie in top mossley holds that title , Chinese called mans wok now

Another vote for Oldham. It has it's problems - just like every other town around Manchester, but there's some real gems in there.

Gallery Oldham is brilliant and there's always something on. It's really good for the kids as well and the staff are really helpful. The Library is great as well, big area for the younger kids to explore too. If you like the theatre, the Coliseum is superb.

We went to Summit Up, the climbing centre and that is absolutely brilliant for kids and adults alike. Anyone can try the "Clip n Climb" sessions and it's just brilliant fun. Our son absolutely loves it up there! The sports centre is in the centre of the town as well and is new and is great for swimming as it's got a huge pool.

The chippy near the market is great and the Cob O Coal bar in the market is really good as is that Fox & Pine. If you're into live music, Whittles is brilliant as well.

Keep an eye out for the "Festival Oldham" events as well as they are always really good, and free. We managed to see that Earth artwork (https://themanc.com/sponsored/the-b...-installation-is-coming-to-oldham-this-month/) a couple of months ago which was spectacular. They really do put on a great show and if you've got kids they are brilliant.

Places like Oldham, Ashton etc get a bad press and some people like to really talk places down. However if you look, there's some real gems in there.

You probably know this but the market pub and the Fox and Pine are run by the same couple. We got "dragged" round Oldham a few weeks back by a couple we go out with who live near (we always insist on town) and found those two really good.

Well said mate. Those east Manc/High Peak towns are great for children, and really make an effort with their museums and events. Love Ashton too, shame that indoor market Tap pub closed but still some gems.

Marple's nice, isn't it? And reachable via the canal by bike too. Around Ramsbottom is a good area as well. No canals though. Canal Street has a canal. I prefer Ramsbottoms.
