Liverpool face the prospect of being expelled from this season’s EFL Cupafter fielding an ineligible player in their third round victory at Milton Keynes Dons.
The identity of the player is unknown but it is understood that the dispute is between the club and the Football Association, relating to the player’s international clearance.
“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”
An EFL spokesperson told The Independent: “We are currently considering the matter.”
Jürgen Klopp fielded several youngsters in Wednesday’s 2-0 win, with the likes of Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott and Herbie Kane making their senior debuts alongside teenage midfielder Curtis Jones.
