It's a different context for Newcastle though. They don't have European football so play less across the season anyway. The break isn't as necessary. We play until June. There's a lot of football to come and a week to rest and recover from the mental pressure of a World Cup is probably a good thing. If this wasn't Liverpool I wouldn't give a shit. We're better out of the league cup in my opinion, it's the bottom of the pile in terms of things you want to win and we've got a tough enough schedule as it is. With it being Liverpool I want to win it, because I despise them. We still might. Maybe they'll be fresh but lacking match sharpness and the few World Cup players we have back will be in better competitive shape to drag us through...or maybe not. They might put out a weakened team to prioritise the league. They play again on Monday away at Villa then Friday at home to Leicester then the following Monday away at Brentford and they're 7pts off 4th. We've got another week until our league game at Leeds so we've got more opportunity to build towards that.

I understand all that but we are talking about players of ours who need game time, not ones who’ve been flogged to death. We aren’t the scousers who play all their best players week in week out, we rotate anyway, so players like Grealish and Phillips especially, should have been back and in the team for tomorrow.

If they're in our end and behave themselves, I have no issues. If they're in our end and start gobbing off, they'll get a thick ear. Simple as that?

I've sat in home ends, so can't really complain when other fans do it lol.

Good post mate. I don’t want to lose again against Liverpool because it’s them but the truth is that Pep always looks at the bigger picture, sometimes dispassionately, and whilst it does wind some people up when he does it (United in the carabou, United home in the quadruple season, Liverpool in the FA semi) it always pays off and is one of the reasons he is so brilliant.

If the conditioning experts at our club have decreed this to be the long term approach I support it. It will irk me to lose to fucking Liverpool again through. I can’t deny that. But it could win us the league and champions league next summer when others are running out of steam.

The other time a big group of us celebrated two goals (George Weah) and we got thrown out under a hail of pies and abuse.

Seems like none of our players who reached the Quarter finals have reported back to City yet. A few were on a flight back from New York this morning.

I know we can only work with what is available, but a midfield 3 of Rodri, KDB and Gundo worries me given lack of pace and/or legs. Particularly as one of the front 3 is likely to be Mahrez. Just think that’s too slow a set-up and we’ll get overrun.
