Clearly nothing less than a win will do as apart from being a six pointer we need to inject some doubt into Liverpool's self belief.

Earlier in the season the majority of Blues (me too) probably thought Liverpool would burn out / blow up at some point whereas we would serenely negotiate our way to another title. It hasn't panned out that way as we have shown unexpected fragility in recent weeks and I wonder if that is because winning the title last season was too easy. We had it in the bag very early on and our opponents weren't able to bring any pressure to bear whatsoever. We are in a completely different position this time as Liverpool matched us stride for stride until we cracked. Yesterday was a good start in regaining our self belief so the next task is to dent theirs. A convincing win would be more than helpful in that respect.

There is still plenty of time for their burn out and, I remain optimistic, they still will

Time to kick start our season, c'mon City!

We've had (or we're in) a small dip, but we're the better squad, man for man. The players can't doubt themselves in this game, and neither can the fans.

This is a game where Pep must play the best of what is available, therefore I think (IMHO) the team should 'start' as follows:

Ederson

Danilo Kompany Stones Laporte

Bernardo (KDB if avail) Dhino David Silva

Sterling Kun Sane

"Although Pep would never compromise his footballing principles, I would consider playing VK just in front of the back 4 with Laporte reverting to his normal position and Zinchenko at LB. Provide some aggressive cover just behind Dhino but Bernardo/KDB would have to drop out! VK was afterall, an effective MFR prior to his re-rolling to CB".

Vin was great against Southampton, but against this lot? A yard too slow these days, I think. And please, Pep, no Zinchenko vs Salah. That is a duel that can only end in tears.
Otherwise, we have enough quality, man for man, and all over the park, to beat these. More than usually, team selection is crucial.

My big fear for this game is that it reminds me of when Leicester came to ours in their championship season, their main strength goes up against our main weakness. We all knew before that game that they were going to sit deep, let us have loads of possession but then have the capability to counter attack us at speed. That's exactly what happened then and I'm expecting the same this time. Having said that, we are a far better outfit now than we were then so we should be able to create decent chances against them. We just need to take them.
