I’m not overly concerned based on yesterday.
Bit frustrating and brought us back down with a bump after what seemed like a good summer but some positive signs

overall we looked short of fitness compared to them which is to be expected, you could see we hadn’t properly gelled yet upfront which is to be expected.

Liverpool came in with a full pre season, playing a line up of with no new faces so obviously looked the better side.

Liverpool and city games are always settled by small margins the the rustyness would obviously play a part in the result. We held our own though for long periods.

Haaland had 3 big chances, for me the fact he had 3 chances against a strong Liverpool back line suggests he will be fine, I think the pace of the game took him by surprise and he was nowhere near fit enough to deal with it. He looked like he was blowing after 30 minutes. A fitter and more settled Haaland probably walks away from yesterday with a couple of goals.
I also suspect we may need to more pace around him as the Grealish and mahrez plan didn’t really work. Slowed it all down so killed the space for him to run in to.

One last thing is Ake is our 4th choice centre back for a reason, he’s solid enough but not world class. He is useful to have in the squad and I don’t think we could get a better player to be 4th choice but when ever he plays I feel we look more vulnerable and less composed.
A fair assessment. We will be fine and should be firing on full cylinders within the month. Yesterday was a fitness exercise but only caused irritation because of who we played. I did think Ake needs to look at the entire move for their 3rd - his positional sense left the entire back four in jeopardy. Pep will go through that as well as Mahrez holding onto the ball way too long - we know they are all good enough to adjust.

Great signs when Alvarez and Foden came on wide. I have no idea who would be deemed our first 11, for example Ilkay adds composure but who drops out for him? A fun season ahead.

Haaland movement in the first half was very good, pity City looked everywhere but where he was running.
City were a yard slower, and wanted an extra touch when they would usually pop the ball off.
3rd goal was not great, defence wide open can put that down to half chasing the game and tired legs and minds at the back.
TAA celebration was telling. We haunt them.

September return date I think as per Pep

Wrote similar in that thread last night.

The role of the build-up play is a bit underrated. It's the corner-stone for any Pep team. It's the key to how to dominate possession without allowing (many) counters. When our build-up play is not at the required level, both our attack and our defence suffer, especially the defence. Laporte and Cancelo are a bit underrated with regard to their huge role in our build-up play. Both had most passes and touches in the whole league last season, with Cancelo having most touches in the history of the PL! Yet both are the least liked from our defensive players. Guess it's related to the fact their style is more continental and that they are compared to crowd favourites such as Jonny Boulders and Kyle Fucking Walker. Nothing bad in loving the latter, they are top players for us, but being OTT critical of Laporte and Cancelo is embarassing.

And they us.

Let’s be honest, on a one to one basis the scousers will beat us 9 times out of 10. They have more belief and more desire. Man for man our team is better but I can’t ever see us getting any better against them. We’re clearly scared and in awe of them. They run us ragged. And anyone who doesn’t see that is deluded. Ignore all this pre season bullshit excuses, as a team their spirit is far better than ours.
I can't remember a Dipper team 'running us ragged'! We had twice as many shots on target - hardly a statistic that indicated being 'running ragged'! They are better, it seems, at taking a chance than we are - still doesn't qualify as 'running ragged. Unlike the scoreline of City 5-0 Dippers a season or two back. You have to go a good bit into the histree we don't have to find a Dipper 5-0 win!

You can see liverpools strategy. They want to hit rhe ground running and get as many points as they can before the world cup break. Injuries, the affect the heat will have on the player's then having to adjust back to the cold weather after an exhausting tournament. I think the restart on boxing day may throw up a few strange results. I trust the club to do what's right, but maybe in the short term this season, try and win as many games as we can before the world Cup.
