They suffer from a collective narcissism.
On one hand, they see themselves as unique, different, separate from the rest of us- the accepted rules and norms of civilised society don’t apply- they can pretty much do what they want.
On the other hand, they desperately need the approval and respect and in many ways, affection and even love from the rest of us. We must at least admire them.
The two views are inseparable in their heads causing the almost schizophrenic attitude to everything- you know ‘we’re not English, we’re scousers,’ we’re working class stiffs’, at the same time ‘we’re European royalty’
