You have to consider many things, when making your selection, including the strength of the opposition.

It’s not just about giving "reserves" and kids game time. It should also be about progressing in the competition and building confidence and understanding within the squad, among other things.

Your first sentence is what struck me too, as the most odd aspect to his quotes.

Either he’s seeking that kind of info out himself or one of his assistants or media team is giving it to him. Either way, on the night your own team are playing or even immediately afterwards, why on earth would other teams line ups in other matches be of any interest at all to you ??
