They think we benefited from VAR. The truth is neither benefited to the tune we’ve seen Arsenal benefit this season.
They challenged us in 2019, won it in 2020, challenged us in 2022 and were not far off again in 2024. I make it 4 seasons they were challengers.
United weren’t even close to being a threat, have they actually finished within 10 points of us in that time until this season?
We had two 90+ point finishes, that went down to the last day against Liverpool.
Liverpool benefited from VAR to the same extent Arsenal did last season in 2020 to gift them the league.
The first year of VAR referees were completely gripped with indecision on the pitch and were only giving decisions if a player flopped to the ground dramatically, VAR would then review it and decide that there was 'contact' and back up the decision of the on-field ref. This state of affairs suited teams who used diving and 'initiating contact' and so Liverpool, who were known divers, benefitted the most.
How can we forget the Liverpool - City game with Oliver in charge where the refereeing was so bad and so one-sided that rival fans were claiming the VAR was broken in that game. We saw Rodri get dragged to the ground by his neck from behind with the pundits saying "he's gone down a bit easily" meanwhile a hand would brush against Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota, Szoboszlai, Alexander-Arnold, etc, etc and we'd hear "well, there's contact so he's entitled to go down".
Both Liverpool and Arsenal have taken advantage of the referees uncertainty and poor decision making skills in the VAR era, sure Liverpool were capable of playing decent football unlike Arsenal, but both manipulated referees by cheating to get results, they just did it in different ways.
There's a reason fans of all clubs have been posting LiVARpool and VARsenal memes everywhere since it came in with barely any Varchester City equivalents, and it isn't just because of the ease with the names.
Honestly, I think that's the biggest reason for Liverpool's drop off under Slot, in the few games of theirs I've seen there has been nowhere near the amount of diving and playacting as there was under Klopp and they've lost the points that a Salah dive would have 'earned' them in previous seasons.
