Disagree with this. You should always go for the big prize. Top 4 spot is the key to meaningful progress for Villa and up to a few weeks ago they were in with a decent shout. This is especially true if they want to keep Barry or attract other top players. Sacrificing a chance at the top 4 and what it represents long term for a good shot at the UEFA cup would have been a short term hit and have no lasting impact. Like it or not MoN is right in thinking the UEFA cup is not a priority when compared to the prospect of getting in the CL. Just as it was not a priority for 'arry when compared to Spurs fighting to stay in the PL
We were never close to the top 4 for it to be a consideration and never that much in trouble relegation wise for it to be factor either when it came to the UEFA leaving us free to give it a high priority
