Loaning players to Celtic

That's a good point, Deila was at Stromgodset where we sent a few youngsters on loan in previous years so we must have formed a good opinion on his handling of young players.

Saw an interview with him, where he said he had long standing relations with City... So there is something there...!!

It's the first stage of getting Roberts regular football. Which will tuffen him up. Maybe another loan to a higher level after this season and a half. Then ready for first team squad in 2018/19 ish

A lot will to do with seeing how they handle the spotlight in Glasgow. I spend a lot of time up there and they take the crazy to another level. If you can do the business in front of such an expectant crowd then it can only put you in good stead for the rest of your career.
The football is secondary bar the European games he'll be involved in.

Probably for the physicality. In a team like ours the players have to get use to being kicked around a lot (just ask Sergio and David) so I can only assume that we loan player's to Celtic to get them use to the treatment you'll get playing for a dominant club and also the pressure for playing for a club that are expected to win every week.

I wouldn't loan Rodgers to any other club next apart from a premier league club or a Spanish club but not many over sea clubs take on English talent.

Isn't their owners son a scout for us?

But Deila does like us a lot: http://videocelts.com/2014/12/blogs...anchester-city-connection#lmrKSH34GGppIgkI.97
Manchester City are one of the biggest clubs, maybe the biggest now in the world.

Those that pointed out Deila's relationship with City are on the money. We obviously trust him to do right by our young lads in terms of giving them a fair crack of the whip and generally taking care of them.

How many times have we seen our young lads loaned out just to make up the numbers at the clubs that took them?

Well for Patrick, if Celtic win the league there's a chance he could get some CL experience, also winning the league can create a winning mentality. Ideally him going to a more technical league would be best, but regular game time is what he needs and what he'll get at Celtic.

I think its a good move for the lad, I'm sure he'll get regular football in front of a big and passionate crowd each week.
But I do wonder about our purchase if him in the first place and what the plans now are. Kelechi has proven that if you're good enough you'll get a chance in the first team and then its up to you to earn your right to stay there. The money we spent on Roberts would suggest we thought he might be able to break into the 1st team as well this season, so loaning out now (as opposed to when we bought him) does that imply we now don't rate him so highly as we did in the summer? In which case it was a very expensive gamble

@EsteemedKompany: Little tit-bit... Roberts was meant to go on loan abroad immediately, but impressed MP a lot so he wanted a closer look for six months

I believe the initial fee was £2million ( with add ons )which isn't all that expensive, relatively speaking.

Good post while I think the relationship with Celtic can be beneficial for both clubs we will be sending out a player on loan that will become the most expensive player in the Scottish league.
I would have thot that this was most certainly not the original plan and that he perhaps has not lived up to expectation. For the fee involved and the standard of player we would have been expecting this stage should have been by-passed and if he was going on loan it should have been to a higher technical standard.
Don't think this does Scottish football any favours either as Celtic already have a massive financial advantage and being able to take on loan a player of Roberts value makes the imbalance even greater.

I'm not convinced it will improve him as much as another European club might. It's not so much who is playing for but the quality he is playing against. It's pretty evident that the quality of most teams in their league isn't great.

I would much rather see him elsewhere. Let's be honest we are talking about a league where Samaras was a regular starter and scorer......

If Pellegrini thought so highly of him you would have thought we'd have seen him on the bench more rather than having 3 defenders on the bench every week.

I think this idea that they could go ‘elsewhere’ or to championship clubs or lower level prem clubs is a highly blue tinted world view. Clubs right down to the lower end of the championship have decent sized squads full of experienced players. They are paying decent wages and have invested in these players so they want their own players to come good. To include an untested youth player at the expense of a senior player that is on the books is a tough call at the best of times but when that player belongs to another club there is little upside for them. They could get some decent performances out of the player but then they go back and they are left with the senior pros that were sat on the bench while some kid had taken their spot. There really is not much in it for a lot of clubs and our kids can end up being meat for the training ground sessions. You can moan about the level in Scotland but it works at Celtic, they play our youth players and are happy to fully integrate them in the team. That has to be 80% of the decision when it comes to a loan.

Some fair points but have to disagree on you saying it works for Celtic.
Take last year for example they had a settled defensive pairing of Van Dijk and Denayer, come summer they got a offer from Southampton for Dijk that they couldn't refuse and we recalled Denayer,so they started the season with a makeshift defence and flopped in champs league qualifiers which is still causing ructions at the club.
I know some Celtic fans who would much prefer the club to bring through prospects and stick with them as domestic domination is guaranteed anyway.
I have a feeling Roberts move will benefit neither party in the long run.

Not all 18/19 year olds can step up to the first team at that age. Plenty are 21/22 before really breaking through!! People develop differently. We've obviously taken a look at Roberts and probably decided that the area of his game lacking the most is his physicality. So sending him to Scotland where he will play for Celtic (going off previous loans - guidetti/denayer) is the best for his development right now and tuffen him up a bit. Maybe a loan to a more technical league next!!

its mostly to do with celtics manager ronny, who has a great relationship with city,he had half a dozen or so players from city at his previous club before taking over at park head.

This is the main reason for the loan.Think the physicality of the Scottish league is a myth.
I work in the offshore industry so I'm in Scotland quite a lot and catch a few matches and it's fast but it's not that physical.I'll guarantee Roberts faced bigger, stronger and more athletic players in the games he played for Fulham than he will in Scotland.
His physical stature won't improve running rings round some sub-standard players and getting the odd kick here and there.
We're not in the 1970s now pace and skill are what's important and the lack of prospects coming through in Scottish football suggest it's not the best environment to develop elite players.

Delia spent time at our academy too, looking round and learning. he has impressed someone, they get ambitious youngsters, albeit raw, and we get back a wiser, tougher player.
