Because for the life of me I fail to see how pointing out that irrational belief in superstitious claptrap is silly makes you 'almost as appalling' as the halfwits who pray to an imaginary friend, go around killing those who have a different imaginary friend,and think the world is 6000 years old.
Because the only book that I have attempted to read which is even more unspeakably dull than "The God Delusion" is "the Bible".
I appreciate that Dawkins can occasionally use an intellectual sledgehammer to crack the risible nut that is organised religion from time to time,but having heard him give a few lectures, I can vouch for the fact that he is not as pompous as he can be perceived,and even does humour sometimes.
Nowadays it's pretty easy to come out as anti-faith,but Dawkins stuck his head above the parapet at a time when death threats from the god squad were not uncommon for those with the temerity to suggest that the whole thing was a laughable house of cards,and for that alone he deserves credit.
