Lokeren 16yrs today!!

Interesting story mate!

What did Bernard say in the end, did he apologise?
Sorry, i was on a large bottle of wine.... Took ages to write that and reading it now didnt finish it off!

So i spoke first (i was in the studio at like 8am) and then Bernard Halford on the phone saying the club is acting on orders from the police. Any City fan found in Lokeren during the day will be arrested.
I cut in and said "arrested for what?"
The presenter then said "now we speak to (whatever name) who is the chief police of Lokeren....
"Good morning, all Manchester City fans are welcome to come to Lokeren and all we ask is they behave themselves and enjoy what the town has to offer"
Presenter: "Mr Halford?"
Halford then starts umming and erring and back peddling. Me amd the presenter trying not to laugh. He still insisted that is what the police had instructed the club to announce to fans but the police chief denied it again.....

Great times following City....locals never knew what hit them...can still hear the sceams of the blue that was in the porta cabin at the back of the temporay stand as his mates pushed it over.
I thought that was Groclin but, to be honest, both trips were a bit of a blur. These were the craziest away trips following City plus Schalke. The Champions League is so plastic in comparison. I still think the Europa League is better for fans. You get more authentic supporters from both sides and less corporates. Poznan and Porto were also great.

Yes, the initial rules about being bussed in pissed me off as I'd already booked Eurostar to Brussels and 2 nights in Ghent. I did some digging online and got an email address for the local chief of police's office so fired off an email complaining about the arrangements and got a similar reply to the one GMR gave to you, that they had no problems with us travelling independently to Lokeren. I never found out where the idea for bussing us in came from.
The club 100% for 2 reasons.
First to make us go on official transport - Thomas Cook.
Second i think the club were crapping it that there would be trouble (TNS apart in Cardiff this was our first away euro game in 24 years) which would reflect badly on the club.

Yes, I've had some good Euro trips in the UEFA/Europa competition. Salzburg, Copenhagen, Aris were all good fun as well as Lokeren, Hamburg and Porto.

Piss poor if it was the club, and the only trouble at Lokeren came from that known Belgian hooligan who got hold of a red and black City top and started kicking off in the home section.

I always suspected it was City's doing and I was as pissed off as you. We too had 2 days booked in Ghent - in an old convent believe it or not! - and were flying into Amsterdam then getting the train from there. Upon hearing about this "arrangement" about being bussed in and not being allowed into Lokeren on the day of the game itself, I fired off an angry e-mail to City. Lo and behold, in the days leading up to the game an article appeared on the official website stating that "due to the good behaviour of fans at the first leg" or words to that effect, the idea of having to gather in the middle of nowhere had been scrapped!

Definitely the club for me. I've just found the e-mail I sent them!

I would like to express my extreme disappointment with the information being supplied by Manchester City Football Club with regards to the forthcoming Lokeren v MCFC fixture in the UEFA Cup. The complaint surrounds the supplementary leaflet issued to all supporters with their match-tickets. This leaflet quite clearly states that ALL City fans should gather at the designated meeting point before the match, to be transported to the stadium on official Lokeren buses. This obviously implies that no fans are allowed to make their own way into Lokeren, and if they do, they risk being sent home. However, this information conflicts wildly with what is posted on Lokeren FC’s official website, and in correspondence passed onto City fans from Lokeren FC via e-mails, etc. What Lokeren FC are actually saying is that those fans on official trips and those travelling by car should make their way to the meeting point. However, those fans wanting to travel to Lokeren by train from any of the major towns and cities in Belgium are welcome to do so, whereby on arrival at Lokeren station they will be transported by bus to the ground.

What I and many other fans are upset about is that this information is sadly lacking on the leaflet, and that the leaflet itself appears to greatly exaggerate the implications of those fans who make their own way to the ground. Myself and 8 friends are staying in Ghent on both the night before and the night of the game and all of us have valid match tickets. The inconvenience of making our way to the meeting point to be “bussed in” and back out after the match is almost beyond belief, especially as we can travel by train between Ghent and Lokeren in less than 20 minutes. Like many fellow supporters, I can only conclude that the information given in the leaflet is an attempt by the club to totally dissuade fans travelling independently of the club, and hence advising fans to pay over the odds for one of the official packages, while travelling independently would enable supporters to make substantial savings on the official packages being offered and give those fans much greater freedom of movement. If this is the case then I find it disgraceful that the club should employ such “Scare tactics” in an attempt to persuade supporters to travel on one of the official trips.

I would appreciate it if you could review the points I have raised in this e-mail, and revert back to me with your comments.

Yours sincerely,
