We normally stay at the Ibis or the Mercure at Wembley but I was too slow to book this time. We booked the Mercure at Paddington. It’s on the right Underground line for Wembley and handy to get from Euston on the way down and to Kings Cross on the way back.
The East Coast Main Line is Shute for the weekend so we will travel down from Edinburgh via Carlisle to Euston on Sunday. The line is (hopefully) back open on Monday so we travel back from Kings Cross.
I know the Carlisle Preston route and it’s problems. I tried to travel that route last Sunday but never made it out of Waverley station. As it happened, it was just as well with the match being postponed. The West Coast line has been closed a couple of times between Carlisle and Preston due to flooding so keep an eye on the weather and news on that. It closed again this morning for a few hours after heavy rain

We have put up with replacement buses to Lockerbie, travelling the long way around via the East Coast over the past six or seven years. I know what to expect.
