I’m getting the word…………….25 years to the day at BBC Television.
Sharp mind.20 years in current job working for a small family business, slitting and guillotine machine,
It pays the bills
Are you Clive Myrie, mate?25 years to the day at BBC Television.
No, but I worked with him a few times when he was a regional reported in Bristol. Top bloke. Are you Clive Myrie, mate?
Started my career as a 16 year old for CEGB North West, then a stint with Nuclear Electric post privatisation. The CEGB bit were great days, wish I could have had the rest of my career there.I joined the UK electricity industry as a 16 y-o trainee and chose redundancy/retirement after 42 years “continuous” service.
Sounds dull doesn’t it - but never a dull moment. I worked for Norweb, CEGB North West, CEGB North East, National Power, Eastern Power Generation Ltd, National Power (again), National Ash Ltd, International Power, Innogy, Regenesys Technologies, RWE UK Shared Services (incl Thames Water), RWE Generation, RWE npower. During those years, I’ve been relocated, reorganised, restructured, privatised, benchmarked, novated, sold-off, re-employed, downsized, rightsized, TUPE’d, outsourced, off-shored and near-shored, merged and acquired. As well as my day-job, I was General Manager of an Ash By-Products Company selling into the Cement Replacement Market. I invested £1m into a failed e-commerce “marketplace” but came out with £4.2m. Was part of the team that sold £3bn worth of Power Station Assets.
Went through around 18 major “change” programmes. On retirement, I held three *functional (* not on the Main board) Directorships being Procurement, Property, and Facilities.
I remember my Dad (who worked at Crossley Engineering) taking the piss when I went to work in an “office” - but my much wiser Uncle Bob said it was a great industry and I should try to stay in it - and I did. Best decision I ever made.
Such a shame our nuclear industry is effectively owned by the French State ! Thanks to Blair - at least Thatcher provided against foreign ownership. I went to the CEGB at Didsbury in 1975 moving to Europa House Cheadle Heath in ‘76. A fine organisation.Started my career as a 16 year old for CEGB North West, then a stint with Nuclear Electric post privatisation.
