Don't think its as straightforward as lots of guns = lots of deaths (although there's obviously some connection. Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" investigated shootings in the US and surprisingly revealed that Canada, which has a higher guns-to-people ratio than the US also has extremely low levels of gun crime, even in metropolitan areas.

The real problem is, if America ever did decide to change it's gun-laws, it's already been going on too long and already far too many guns are in the populous for it to make a difference, the only people who would hand in guns are the ones that wouldn't think to use them, thus leaving them vulnerable to those who use them no matter what.
