Lord Pannick to represent City / Pannick's OJ-style Summation

To Panic/ The Smiths

Panicick is our brief from London
Panick on the streets of New Islington
He's yet to prove himself

Could our club be the same again?
The lies and deceit that he'll strip down
I wonder to myself

Golf n' posh grub in that club In Mere
But, tater pie, is what you get here
So you run down to Tast tapas in town

But there's panic on the streets of Ardwick
Denton, Gorton and Moss Side
I wonder to myself

Burn down Old Trafford
Hang the blessed Fergie
Because the bullshit that rags constantly say

They say Council house massive about my club
Hang the fuckin' lot of 'em
Because the bitter bullshit they constantly say

Hang the Fergie, hang the Fergie, hang the Fergie, hang the Fergie...

Getting Silk (becoming a KC) is awarded to any barrister regarded as having reached a degree of proficiency in their particular area of legal speciality. So, yes there are KCs practising as criminal lawyers.
... not sure why they would though - the bog standard pay grade's about 1/4 - 1/3 of a barrister's for jobbing lawyer.

My understanding is that any qualified solicitor can try for the bar - they select a specialised field for themselves - which may be contract law, employment law or criminal law. In the case of the latter it would be a specific part of criminal law (so barristers would cover a specific type of offence...sex offences / fraud offences etc, only). Its probably the same for those covering other types of law - I wouldn't know because I've never asked

If Arsenals legal beagle, Jack Hackett, is anything to go by - we'll be fine.

I‘m not a lawyer though I have in my professional career been involved in a number of complex legal matters though only from a commercial perspecgive. I wouldn’t put too much value therefore in my comments as I’m merely expressing my views. However, it does seem obvious to me at a time when the government has produced a white paper proposing an independent regulator, this case will likely expose the FA PL’s ability (or lack of) to regulate itself and may strengthen the case for an independent regulator to be appointed. But that’s just my view. I don’t charge £5,000 per hour (more’s the pity).

Anyone can apply to train for the Bar. Getting pupillage is far more difficult and depends a lot on personal contacts. An education at Winchester and Oxbridge will help.

As per with most careers, it’s not what you know, but who you know.

No wonder I’ve been stuck in the same job for 27 years.

Read your reply before. Good to know you think the same about FFP. :-)

I do like the irony though of Abu Dhabi appointing a Jewish lawyer who’s married to an Israeli woman. ;-)
Martin Edelman is a New York Jew who has been on City's board for more than a decade. He concentrates his legal practice on real estate and corporate mergers amongst other things. Working with Jews is not something novel in the United Arab Emirates.

I have a feeling he’s a Spurs fan.

He's actually one of your lot, Jack. See this profile here: https://www.counselmagazine.co.uk/articles/the-essence-of-advocacy-lord-pannick-qc

It might amuse you that he once wrote a piece for The Times on judges making rulings when in a bad mood and made the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that the Judicial Appointments Commission might adopt a policy of not appointing Spurs fans to the bench given that they must be perennially disappointed at finishing below Arsenal in the league, as quoted in this article: https://www.legalcheek.com/2017/01/...ts-criminals-should-be-sentenced-by-computer/

A former colleague of mine from back in the day who's still a friend on Facebook and in occasional contact with me knows Pannick's wife quite well (they have kids who are classmates) and is invited sometimes to parties at the Pannick home. When it was reported that Lord Pannick might represent City in the CAS case against UEFA, I asked my friend if she might do some digging for information for me. Unsurprisingly, she told me to piss off (but more politely than that).

Thanks for that. I stand corrected. Like me he was born in Islington, so no surprise he’s a Gooner. Maybe he goes to games with FA PL Panel chair Rosen KC?

I know 2 barrister's personally. Down to Earth lads that I met on the old days of standing on the Kippax. They certainly weren't educated at those kind of institutions. Both were state educated and went to Manchester Uni. Both also from Wythenshawe, which is not in the least bit privileged.

It made me laugh when I saw suggestions that Rosen's Arsenal allegiance could be a factor in him not being an appropriate person to chair the panel. For City to send their Gooner KC in to argue that point would stretch credibility just a bit. :)

I‘m certain you cannot impugn the integrity of Rosen but if you are in any doubt, you can rest assured you have Pannick there to keep him honest!

Sure, it’s difficult getting pupillage without having connections but not impossible. By the way I was at Manchester University and used to watch City one week (from the Kippax) and Utd the next week. It’s unbelievable how much Manchester (and football) has changed from those days.

without knowing your age its difficult to judge that (re change)...

Did going to trafford remind you of home (considering you were probably stood next to your Mum and Dad's next door neighboor when on the stretford end)??
