So my large (ISH) suitcase is nearing the end of it's life and I have been looking for a new one (ideally a weird colour to make it easily identified on the airport luggage belt).
One shop I was in had a range of cases, most weighing between 4.5 and 5kg.
I have flights booked with 20kg limit for hold luggage. I don't want 25% of this used on the case alone.
Going online and some don't even tell you what the empty case weighs.
Most frustrating.

I would recommend a hard shell case with four wheels. You want one that the zip can't be accessed with a ball point pen.

Had a rock soft shell suitcase for about 7 years 4 holidays a year been brilliant lightweight and its green easy to see .The mrs has had about 3 suitcases in the same time period lightest suitcase in the world all this shite they've just fallen apart

I've got a large IT hard-shell case which is expandable and has two compartments. I use it for my trips to the USA. Weighs 4kg and has lime green corners and wheels, so can't be mistaken.

I would recommend a hard shell case with four wheels. You want one that the zip can't be accessed with a ball point pen.

Agree that the hardshell are preferable, especially if bringing back anything that can be broken... Though the extra couple of kilo's can cost quite a lot if flying with Mr O'Leary's airline (and since Balkan stopped flying Belfast to Burgas Ryanair from Dublin is the better option rather than Aer Lingus).
I hate it when you look at a case and it says "lightweight" but doesn't say what the weight is.

My advice is don't waste your money on buying hard shell suitcases.
When you land just stand by the conveyor belt and take whichever one you fancy.

Not sure of the empty weight but I've used a large American tourister case that has stood up to 100's of 1000's of miles and dozens of trips over the last few years so can vouch for durability and it's a lot cheaper than the equivalent Samsonite etc.

I've only ever bought the non hard shell (soft shell?) ones. I've never had anything break in my suitcase. And I've brought a lot of random shit on a plane. If someone's vaguely breakable, I wrap a towel around it or something. I got one of the really light ones from Matalan and before that, an ultralight Carlton one. Both are still in use.

OP you've not said what the case is for but I agree, 4 or 5 keys in weight cuts right into your profit margins.

Rimowa. Got some nice copper coloured hardshell ones recently, they look good and very secure. The bigger size is quite heavy for the missus though.

Isn’t it more convenient just to buy her a seat as well?…

Ridiculously expensive cases at purchase but Rimowa are robust and rewarding.

I wouldn't buy anything that you'll be annoyed if it gets lost or damaged. We use soft shell ones and they usually last about 10 years with regular use and brand names don't seem to lat any longer than others.. TK Max often have some good deals.
